As some students may have little knowledge of Roman history, there is in the Introduction a brief sketch to serve as a background to the outline of the history of the law which follows. The Introduction also deals briefly with the law of actions. The author has thought it advisable to give a more detailed treatment of certain topics of Roman Law, which appear to be of particular value as an Introduction to the Law of Scotland as, from an educational point of view, comparatively detailed study of some branch of law is necessary to elucidate the working out of legal ideas, and is of more value than a wider but more general survey.
