It was in the early 1960s that Charles Moseley and his wife bought a run-down cottage in a remote Cambridgeshire hamlet (Reach). The people, earning a hard living from their small farms and ancient machinery, treated the Moseleys kindly but with condescension. He reveals the ancient feuds and half-forgotten loves whose echoes still formed the sub-text of village life; and he records, with some regret, but no resentment, the gradual transformation of what, for him and his growing family, had become 'our village'.
