It was in the early 1960s that Charles Moseley and his wife bought a run-down cottage in a remote Cambridgeshire hamlet (Reach). Their new home was no picture-book English village: the church was Victorian and undistinguished, no immemorial elms shaded pretty cottages, and the single pub often ran out of beer. The people, earning a hard living from their small farms and ancient machinery, treated the Moseleys kindly but with condescension. Thirty years later, Dr Moseley has written a warm, enchanting, eloquent account of how this dour place won his loyalty and, ultimately, his love. He describes the troubles and triumphs of restoring his cottage, often to the accompaniment of less than helpful comment and advice from neighbours, the satisfaction of growing his own food in garden and allotment, and the gradual mastering of ancient skills, from bee-keeping to poaching. He also introduces us to his neighbours: to Elsie and Adam next door, to Alfred the roadman, whose only excursion to foreign parts was a trip to Lowestoft in 1923,to Noah, who owned the pub, and, above all, to Seth, handyman, rogue and fantasist extraordinary, who adopted the newcomer as his pupil and accomplice in crime. He reveals the ancient feuds and half-forgotten loves whose echoes still formed the sub-text of village life; and he records, with some regret, but no resentment, the gradual transformation of what, for him and his growing family, had become 'our village'. Everyone who reads this book will share Charles Moseley's gratitude that he and his family had the opportunity 'to warm our hands at the very last embers of English country life' before it became, for ever more, a memory.
