To the front, following a facsimile of original titles, is John Nicholson's introductory essay: "Thoughts on the republication of Redfarn's Old Cambridge" in which he discourses on the parallels between the loss of Redfarn's Cambridge to the Victorian rebuilding of the City and, a century later, the loss of the Victorian Lion Yard & Petty Cury, one of England's most famous streets, to the modern shopping centre that replaced them. Another area of Cambridge, 'The Kite' was also at the time of publication, under threat & since demolished to make room for the Grafton Shopping Centre.
