The study of amphibians and reptiles is called herpetology, a word which comes from the Greek for "a crawling animal." Although it is usual to group them together for study purposes, these creatures really belong to two distinct classes - the Amphibia and Reptilia. Britain is poorly off for amphibians and reptiles, and this is partly due to the distant Ice Age, and to the sea which now separates us from the Continent. At one time, the severe cold must have killed off all the amphibians and reptiles which lived in these parts. Later, when the snow and ice receded, and before the sea had risen sufficiently to make us an island, a number of species managed to get back. They had a few thousands of years in which to do this, but even so, only 12 species reached here before the last land bridge was severed - at the Straits of Dover. Since then, two more species have been introduced, so that in all there are now 14 native reptiles and amphibians in the British Isles. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 79 pages.
