Willmer, E. N. - Old Grantchester

Title: Old Grantchester
Description: Bird's Farm Publications, Barton, Cambridgeshire, 1977. Reprint, Paperback, Illustrated by: Willmer, E. N.. Very Good/N/A.. 9780905232010 front endpaper brown sketch map of Grantchester 1975; rear endpaper brown sketch of the Orchard Tea-rooms; illustrated by 46 b/w. sketches with facing descriptions, mainly of buildings but some maps & views; "One hundred years ago (1875) Samuel Page Widnall wrote, illustrated, printed and published a 'History of Grantchester', all with his own hands. His father had owned extensive nursery gardens in Grantchester from which he achieved fame, a fortune and medals from the Royal Horticultural Society, as the result of his cultivation of dahlias. This allowed the son not only to purchase the Old Vicarage but to devote his time to a wide variety of the gentler arts, and these included research into the history of the village. It is therefore appropriate that there should once again be some record of the village as it now stands. The drawings in this volume, together with their captions, will, I hope, give some indication of the contemporary scene, at least in so far as those structural features of the village which contribute to its unique character are concerned. It is interesting and perhaps pertinent to the consideration of that character to observe that the record, which was initiated for purely aesthetic reasons, depicts almost exclusively the buildings that were in existence in Widnall's time; even the landscape scenes have changed but little; hedges are fewer and fields are larger, but many are still those depicted on the map of 1802 which shows the original enclosures."
