Near Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. 9780862940454 This copy belonged to the architectural historian Kerry Downes; his father Ralph Downes was organist at the Brompton Oratory from 1936 to 1977 and Professor of Organ at the Royal College of Music from 1954 to 1977. Ralph Downes is the author of the final chapter of the book about the Oratory Organ and is written about in the penultimate chapter about the Oratory's music. Loosely inserted is a 1983 letter from Ralph Downes to the editor of the book, Michael Napier which accompanied three photographs that Downes sent to Napier. Two of these photographs showing the original decor of St. Joseph's Chapel and the Dolours Chapel are present with the letter. The third is not but is described in detail in the letter being of the 1936 Choir Lunch and details all those present including a young Ralph Downes. None of the three photographs are included in the published book. Clean brown covers with gilt lettering on the spine and a light scuff on the front . Sound binding, clean pages and end-papers. Contains colour plates (full page illustrations) and black and white illustrations. No dust-jacket. Previous owner's name, architectural historian Kerry Downes, in pencil at the front.
