PYE, MICHAEL - The King Over the Water

Title: The King Over the Water
Description: New York, U.S.A. Henry Holt & Company. 1981, First Edition. (ISBN: 0030575516) Quarto Cloth with dust jacket, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. In 1940, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor arrived in Nassau, where the Duke was to take up his post as Governor of the Bahamas, they were still the most romantic couple in the world, he the handsome Prince of Wales, she the woman for whose sake he had given up a crown. But in Washington and London the royal Governor and his wife were already under suspicion in offical quarters. The pro-German sentiments he had expressed during the 1930s were already well known, and the contacts that the couple had had with German agents and sympathizers during their sojourn in France and Portugal after the abdication had made their presence in Europe intolerable. Exile in the Bahamas was Churchill's way of keeping the Duke and Duchess out of harm's way. After all, nothing ever happened in the Bahamas', or so they thought.
