Meade was stationed on the Naval vessels Curacoa and Esk. Lieutenant Herbert meade was captured by Pai Mairre Maori at Tataroa, Waikato January 1865 but realeased. He died in England 1868 and his account was edited by his brother and published posthumously. CONDITION Has been professionally rebound with Tan Leather spine and corners, with Tan Buckram cloth. Portions of the text (pages 171 to 176) have been removed at time of rebind. Probably due to being unwholesome to owner in Victorian times as this portion describes Maori politics, attitudes towards Christianity and sex. Pp x [2] 375 with 32 nice engraved illus. Frontis illus of Ohinemuto Geyser laid in with previous owners details to reverse. Otherwise bright and crisp copy. Good.
