Catherine McAuley founded the Sisters of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland in 1831. Sisters of Mercy were the first religious sisters to come to Aotearoa New Zealand arriving in Auckland from Ireland on 9 April 1850. They came at the request of the Maori women in Auckland wanting a wahine tapu. From 1850 to 1897 four Mercy Congregations were founded with the others being in Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. CONDITION Blue cloth (fresh and clean) pp [5] 223 with 23 illus covering the various places, convents schools, orphanages, hospitals etc set up by the sisters. Bright and crisp copy. DJ has some tears with loss bottom rear cnr. Very Good/Very Good.
