Marbled calf spine gilt dentelles with worn gilt edges. [spine damaged at head & foot for max.1cm./lacks both title labels but retains both green gilt volume numbers/tips worn/hinges cracked but held by cords/edges rubbed] Engraved titlepage vol.1 + [8pp =Preface & Contents] + 268pp Engraved titlepage vol.2 + [4pp =contents] + 317pp Directions to the binder state that vol.1 should contain the Life and vol.2 the Essays however both titlepages & the spine numbers call for the essays to be in volume One and the Life in the second volume. The endpapers are a bit foxed or edge-browned and the two titlepages are foxed also as is the following leaf, however all the other pages are clean, white and crisp. The pastedown has a handsome engraved coat of arms bookplate of Foster L.Coore. The essays are diverse from slavery to swimming, fom war to the savages of North America and in more than 30 subjects.
