Octavo [in 4's] worn leather on 5 raised bands [lacks one gilt title label/corners v. worn hinges split but held by cords/head and foot of spine chipped to below headband, binding intact however] xxix [=titlepage +dedication +to reader +Life of Horam] +354pp Volume II titlepage +406pp Vol I cover page quite stiff. Cover of Vol II disatached. Vol 1 dedication to George Prince of Wales (future George IV) aged just two when these works published. Text and illustrations clear in both copies however. *Modelled on Arabian Nights these stories are written by an Oxford cleric published shortly before his early death. Purporting to be the translator of these discovered oriental tales the pseudonymous Charles Morell was supposed to be a former Ambassador from the British Settlements in India to the Great Mughal Emperor, and working for the East India Trading Company, but actually Morell as well as the tales were purely imaginative fiction written by the young James Ridley.Vol. I is a stated 3rd edition of a book first published in 1764.
