Published NY: New York Historical Society, 1938. 8vo. 7 1/2" x 10 1/2", xxvi+246pp. "with 154 illustrations from photographs taken by the author in the years 1897-1901." Half-bound brown Morocco leather with raised bands, gilt titles and spine decorations and brown linen cloth over boards, marbled endpapers with laid preliminaries, top edge gilting, printed on bright coated paper. Presentation copy to the Veterans of the Seventh Regiment by the New York Historical Society, with presentation bookplate on pastedown. At the turn of the 20th Century, James Reuel Smith made bicycle excursions across New York City, photographing and chronicling its springs and well. In 1938, three years after his death, the New York Historical Society published this volume of his pictures and observations. Wear to the leather at the edges, some rub at the spine, mild creasing to a few page corners, Veterans of the Seventh Regiment stamp on pastedown, along with the same text handwritten boldly in marker, else a near fine example of a scarce book. Clean and bright, crisp, attractive. Very Good Plus/No Jacket.

Bound in brown pebbled leather with gilt titles and gilt embossed seals of New York City, all edge gilting, printed on heavy coated paper. Chips to the leather, splitting at the joints, rear inner hinge split and separating, rear cover loose, moisture residue affecting the rear hinge and last 16 sheets (street maps), leaving one to two inches of the map stuck to its facing page at the bind. Some tearing/chipping to some edges, light sweating to a few preliminaries but most pages unaffected and clean. Still a solid working volume with most pages very good. Fair/No Jacket.
