A charming scrapbook comprising of a plethora of plates and illustrations depicting Brighton, all taken from other works.The plates also show various fashions of Brighton, the prominent people known to frequent the city, and interior views of important places, such as the Pavilion. Including plates of the baths, St. Ann's Well and wild garden at Furze Hill, St. Nicholas Old Parish Church, Hospital for Sick Children, Town Hall at Bartholomews, Ship Hotel, the sea front, Bedford Square, Brunswick Square, the pier, Brighton College, many views of the Pavilion, and some satirical clippings, including one of a man dancing with a seal.Thirteen of the plates are coloured.Including two maps of Brighton and Sussex.Undated, dated from the latest date given in the text. A very scarce 1945 Ordnance Survey map of Edinburgh, Sheet 74 of the Ordinance Survey's 'One Inch Map of England and Wales' publication. For this series, a full map of England and Wales was divided into square inches, and a detailed map created of each square inch, with the scale of the maps set at 'one inch to one statue mile&apos.To the north of the map is the entire city of Edinburgh, and its surroundings, reaching to the Moorfoot Hills to the map's south, and the Lemmermuir Hills to the east.This work was once held by Cambridgeshire Libraries, and bears a number of markings as such, not affecting the map itself. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII. A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire. This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie"s library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. She purchased the home in 1940, redesigning the interior and amassing an impressive library, featuring many examples of her own bookbinding.   Rebound in cloth covered boards. Cloth bright, with ink library markings to tail of back strip. Cloth detaching to back strip head and tail, with boards remaining firmly held. Bookplate removal to front pastedown, with library stamp to front free endpaper. Internally, map exceptionally bright, with no tears. In 1836, at a time when exhaustive planning was emerging as an ideal in the British Tourist Industry, London-based publisher John Murray began to produce travel guide books for destinations across Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa. Alongside twenty travel routes, this handbook offers a brief historical introduction to each region, and discussion of its physical features. The map of the Isle of Wight has a few tape repairs to the reverse. With publisher's adverts to the front and rear pastedowns and endpapers. With a seventy six page catalogue of hotel advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Externally, sound. Rubbed to the boards and the spine with some light wear at the extremities. There are two tears in the cloth to the rear joint, and the cloth is torn all the way down the front joint.
