KOCH, RICHARD
Selecting Shares That Perform
Upstairs Blue a5, Financial Times Prentice Hall. 2000. (ISBN: 9780273650249). Paperback, 24 cm. Paperback in good condition. 3rd edition 2000. Investors Guide. He makes it sound so easy. Just select the shares that perform. Now in its third edition, Richard Koch's Selecting Shares That Perform has earned its right to a place on every investor's bookshelf. Koch sets out rules that anyone, from novice investor to seasoned expert can use to his or her benefit. The breezy, can-do attitude is helpful--to say nothing of the information, presented a little bit at time, so as to not overwhelm. By the end, every reader will have gained invaluable insights and useful knacks for understanding how the best City investors profit. One of Koch's first insights is that different investment techniques are appropriate for different kinds of people, but the basic concept revolves around how much effort the reader/investor is willing to take on. The meat of the book is in the 10 different means of selecting the next big winners, including such advice as: follow the rainmakers and buy the shares that those with an investing track record have bought; select a handful of truly excellent shares and then sit back and let your profits ride; invest in things you know about; find companies with growing earnings; dig deep into company reports and understand the investment. Koch concludes by stating that "none of the ways recommended is a licence for the lazy to get rich quick. All of the ways are encouragement to the industrious and creative elements in our society to apply the same mixture of effort and inspiration to the compounding of wealth as to its original creation." Amen to that. --Bruce McWilliams. Used: Acceptable.

CHATFEILD-ROBERTS, JOHN
Fundology: The Secrets of Successful Fund Investing
Harriman House. 2006. (ISBN: 9781897597774). Hardcover, 9.3 x 6.1 x 0.8 inches. Condition good. Isbn 1-897597-77-0, 1897597770. Owning an investment fund is the easiest and most convenient way for investors to put their money to work in the world's financial markets. Yet only a handful of people really seem to understand how to make the most of the opportunity that funds offer. Too many pick the wrong fund in the wrong market at the wrong time - a sure-fire recipe for disappointment. In this important new book, an award-winning manager at one of the UK's best fund management firms explains in simple language what it takes to buy and sell investment funds successfully - and how to avoid the common mistakes that so often condemn fund investors to poor results. John Chatfeild-Roberts, head of the fund of funds team at Jupiter Asset Management, is responsible for sifting through the thousands of funds that are open to UK investors and hand-picking the best 10 - 15 for his clients' portfolios. The Jupiter Merlin range of funds has won a string of industry awards for their consistent performance. Now, in Fundology - The Secrets of Successful Fund Investing, he explains in detail how to set about becoming an expert fund investor - what to do and (just as importantly) what not to do. While he concentrates on unit trusts and open-ended investment companies (OEICs), his specialist area, many of the principles outlined here apply equally well to other types of fund. The topics covered include: - Why funds are worth considering.- How unit trusts and OEICs work.- How to pick the best managers.- The truth about costs.- The trouble with index funds.- Which funds the Jupiter team own (and why).- The most common mistakes that investors make. Easy to read and outspoken in places, Fundology is a must read for anyone interested in knowing. John Chatfeild-Roberts (43) has been analysing and investing in funds professionally for 14 years. He and his team manage the Jupiter Merlin range of funds of funds, for which they have been voted Best Multi-Manager Group of the Year for an unprecedented 3 years in a row - 2003, 2004 and 2005. After graduating from Durham University in Economics, his early career was spent serving in the Army both in the UK and abroad. Before moving to Jupiter, he ran similar operations for Lazard Asset Management and Henderson Administration in the 1990s. He is married to Doone. They have two children, Tom (12) and Harry (10), and live in Stilton Cheese country. John spends his spare time with the family walking and riding in the countryside, and in the summer, playing cricket. Used: Acceptable.
