[Risorgimento]. Armandi, Pier Damiano
Ma Part Aux éVénements Importants de L'Italie Centrale En 1831
Paris, Palais Royal, 1831. First edition. Paper wrappers. 76 pp. 8vo. General Armandi's defense of his actions in the uprisings of 1831 that broke out in the Papal State between the Legations of Bologna, Romagna and Marche, at the instigation of Ciro Menotti from Modena- where he had been promoted to general by the revolutionary government of Bologna and appointed minister of war. Later his work was heavily criticized by Mazzini and General, Sercognani. Though the accusations of his lack of foresight and initiative, are not without any foundation, he defended himself with the publication. Pier Damiano Armandi (1798-1855) served in the army of the Republic and the Empire , ought in Genoa, in Savona, then in all the Napoleonic wars, in the battles of Austerlitz, Vicenza, Wagram, Bautzen, where on the field he was appointed artillery colonel by Napoleon, then in Dennewitz, in Leipzig, in Hanau. When Napoleon fell, he went to Rome as tutor of the children of Louis Bonaparte. After 1831 and the amnesty of Pius IX he took part in the defense of Venice. Back in France, he was appointed by Napoleon III as imperial librarian in Saint-Cloud. Rare. OCLC locates only three copies in North America: UC Berkeley, Harvard, & Univ. Conn. plus another six elsewhere Cambridge, Teubinger, Arco, Casanatense, Bern, & BN France. Original printed wrappers reinforced with a new spine, else a very good copy, front wrapper with few notations and wear at the extremities, wide untrimmed margins.

The Defence of the Realme, by Sir Henry Knyvett, 1596. Now for the First Time Printed, from a Ms. In the Chetham Library, Manchester
[Oxford], At the Clarendon press, 1906. First edition. Blind ruled stiff paper wrappers with front edge beveled (paperback). xxxvi, [1], 75 pp. [1]. 8vo. Tudor and Stuart Library series. Henry Knyvett (d.1598), brother of Thomas Knyvett, wrote this treatise on the training and preparations to defend Britain in case its fleet should be unable to stop invaders on the high seas. No doubt the instability of the European situation in the early years of this century led to its first publication in 1906. Wrappers soiled, scattered foxing to leaves, but overall still a very good clean unmarked copy.
