Without the rare June, 1828 issue, as usual. Illustrated with a large folding map and 153 plates, some folding, of which 65 are hand-colored, as well as numerous woodcut illustrations within the text, by artists such as Alken, Cruikshank, Roberts, Sutherland, Berenger, Landseer, and others. A comprehensive view of the life and habits of those who lived in the English countryside, often seen as a companion work to Ackermann's REPOSITORY OF THE ARTS, which chronicled the taste and fashions of sophisticated metropolitan life. Book of Common Prayer
Boston, Printed for The Commission (by D. B. Updike at The Merrymount Press), 1928 (1930). First Edition. Hardcover. Thick folio (9-3/4" x 13-3/4") in publisher's oxblood pigskin leather stamped in black, top edge gilt; xli, 611 pages. Beautifully printed in black and red on English hand-made rag paper by D. B. Updike in an edition of 500 copies of which only 250 were for sale at the cost of one hundred and fifty dollars in 1930. Updike's magnum opus and one of the most beautifully designed American books of the twentieth century. Printed for the Joint Commission on the Revision and Enrichment of THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER and financed by the banker J.P.Morgan, Updike was well-suited to printing the work being a staunch Episcopalian and familiar with the text; it took two years to produce. This copy was presented to the Archbishop of Nova Scotia with a partly hand-written printed sheet laid in. A title notorious for wear and weak hinges, this is a tight, Near Fine copy with light edgewear and minor marks to the spine and front cover For Updike it was the culmination of everything he believed in and understood, and every facet of his personality and sensibility was called upon to produce this masterpiece of print and spirit" (A CENTURY FOR THE CENTURY 25); PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN 173.

The first volume of this scarce periodical containing a title page, 117 four-page issues, 12 supernumerary numbers, and an extensive index covering the period of 13 February 1708 to 25 March 1709. Without the two 12-page quarterly issues. The periodical would stop publication in 1711. Edited by Aaron Hill and Marshall Smith, with probable contributions from John Gay, John Arbuthnot, and Samuel Garth, among others. Contains questions from readers and answers from contributors on miscellaneous topics including theology, science, mathematics, natural history, medicine, music, customs, manners, etc. with foreign news, news of war, shipping, advertisements, and much poetry, often ribald. Contemporary manuscript notation on verso of title page by former owner titled "The Disparity" about Sampson signed "Thomas Mellin his own Book." On two blanks at the rear is manuscript music titled "A Song By Mr. H[enry] Purcell," which is his well-known composition "What Can We Poor Females Do" written in 1694. There is also a small sheet of paper laid in with a manuscript statement in an early hand about the volume's contents. Bookplate of Isaac John Greenwood on the front pastedown. Old, mostly rather faint dampstain at bottom of many pages; binding rather worn but intact with a one-inch chip at the head of the spine. About Very Good .

Contains a biography of Tower as well as a detailed catalog of American Laws. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Tower on the front endpaper and scarce as such: "To/D. Mc N. Stauffer Esqre/with the compliments of/Charlemagne Tower [?]/9 January 1891./Philadelphia." With the recipient's (David McNeely Stauffer) bookplate on the front pastedown. Uncut and largely unopened. Near Fine David McNeely Stauffer (1845-1913) was an American civil engineer, editor, artist, and collector. He worked for several railroads including the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad until 1876 when he went into private practice. He wrote scholarly articles and edited the Engineering News. In addition to collecting autographs and illustrations, he designed book plates and did pen and ink drawings.
