Berman, Alvin L.
The Brain Stem of the Cat: A Cytoarchitectonic Atlas with Stereotaxic Coordinates
Madison, Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin, 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: Elephant Folio 23" tall. Lots of big words and uber-scarce in the trade, there being only two additional copies available on-line currently, at $450.00 and $580.00. "The cat," says the author of this authoritative text, Alvin L. Berman, born 19 February 1914, and dead by October 3, 1999, "is one of the most widely used animals in modern research on the central nervous system" (from the Preface). In 1992 the Alvin L. Berman and Ruth Bleier Memorial Student Research Award was initiated, awarded by the Friends of the Waisman Center, commemorating the contributions of these two Waisman Center scientists (Waisman Center dot edu web-site). The brains of nine adult cats were prepared for this study, and the heads were placed in the "standard" Horseley-Clarke Stereotaxic Position (Horseley, 1908), the apparent choice for decades of stereotaxic photography. Preface, Introduction, Materials and Methods, and then three Parts of plates: I (frontal plates 1-30, with descriptive text), II (sagittal plates 31-55), III (horizontal plates, 56-80). Pasadena, California, Self-published, 1976. First Edition. Softcover. Size: 4to 11" - 13" tall. Complete in two volumes, an engaging autobiography by the California-based physicist, Jesse William Monroe DuMond (July 11, 1892 – December 4, 1976). Stiff blue card-stock binding, black tape over spines, chipped a bit, wraps a bit sunned, very lightly soiled, else clean and unmarked of interior but for the fact of a photocopied insertion of DuMond's bibliography (177 items, all in) between Table of Contents and first page of text in Volume I. Pasted-on paper label titles to each front cover. Dedicated gratefully to his second wife, Louse Marie (Baillet) DuMond, whom he thanks at end of Volume II the entirety of which she typed. 28 chapters, all in, between the two volumes. DuMond was an American experimental physicist. DuMond was born a U.S. citizen in France, his father being the landscape painter Frederick Melville DuMond (1867 - 1927). His Wikipedia entry notes that his mother Louise Adele Kerr died at his age two, so he moved to Paris when a wee lad and then to the U.S. to live with paternal grandparents in Rochester, New York. He earned a Bachelor's degree in 1916 from the Throop College of Technology (later to become California Institute of Technology), worked steadily as an engineer and physicist to and through and following W.W.I., then for General Electric, then at the Thomson-Houston Company in Paris before joining the National Bureau of Standards. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the California Institute of Technology and stayed there, retiring in 1963 (Wikipedia). He had a productive, influential career in both business and private industry and was a member of many scientific clubs and societies. Wikipedia notes that the author "became famous for investigating the line broadening in the Compton effect due to the speed distribution of the electrons in the atom. To this end, he developed a new type of X-ray spectrometer with several crystals and also had the original idea for X-ray spectrometers with curved crystal surfaces." Anonymous [Eliza Gutch]
Notes on Un-Natural History Being a Selection of Fictions Accounting As Facts
, Ward, Lock, and Tyler, 1868. . Hardcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy, bound in green cloth over beveled boards, gilt lettering and flourish to front cover and spine. First Edition copy, bound in blind-ruled green cloth with gilt lettering and flourish to front cover and spine. Lightly soiled endpapers, previous owner's inscription, else clean and unmarked of interior. 152 pp. plus list of publisher's other current works. Eliza Gutch was the author also of Notes on the Months and other popular works. This book contains a wealth of home-spun homilies and gentle corrections as to popular but fallacious conclusions the general public has made about the way things are. For example, "If Eve ever thought that the enlargement of Adam's larynx was due to the forbidden apple* having stuck in his throat, it could not have been until she was in her dotage. If she ever believed that when her infants smiled in sleep, angels were talking to them, it must have been after her expulsion from Eden, for no babies were known in its blissful bowers. If she ever told herself that birds, by raising their heads aloft, say a grace after every draught, she showed an ignorance of ornithological anatomy, which, in the days before she fell, would not have been allowed to remain undissipated.*"Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
