Berman, Alvin L.
The Brain Stem of the Cat: A Cytoarchitectonic Atlas with Stereotaxic Coordinates
Madison, Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin, 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: Elephant Folio 23" tall. Lots of big words and uber-scarce in the trade, there being only two additional copies available on-line currently, at $450.00 and $580.00. Massively heavy, oversized volume, a legitimate elephant folio hardcover format, measuring 23 1/4" x 17 3/4" tall and wide, respectively. "The cat," says the author of this authoritative text, Alvin L. Berman, born 19 February 1914, and dead by October 3, 1999, "is one of the most widely used animals in modern research on the central nervous system" (from the Preface). In 1992 the Alvin L. Berman and Ruth Bleier Memorial Student Research Award was initiated, awarded by the Friends of the Waisman Center, commemorating the contributions of these two Waisman Center scientists (Waisman Center dot edu web-site). The brains of nine adult cats were prepared for this study, and the heads were placed in the "standard" Horseley-Clarke Stereotaxic Position (Horseley, 1908), the apparent choice for decades of stereotaxic photography. Preface, Introduction, Materials and Methods, and then three Parts of plates: I (frontal plates 1-30, with descriptive text), II (sagittal plates 31-55), III (horizontal plates, 56-80). Anonymous [Eliza Gutch]
Notes on Un-Natural History Being a Selection of Fictions Accounting As Facts
, Ward, Lock, and Tyler, 1868. . Hardcover. Size: 12mo 7" - 7. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy, bound in green cloth over beveled boards, gilt lettering and flourish to front cover and spine. First Edition copy, bound in blind-ruled green cloth with gilt lettering and flourish to front cover and spine. Lightly soiled endpapers, previous owner's inscription, else clean and unmarked of interior. 152 pp. plus list of publisher's other current works. Eliza Gutch was the author also of Notes on the Months and other popular works. This book contains a wealth of home-spun homilies and gentle corrections as to popular but fallacious conclusions the general public has made about the way things are. For example, "If Eve ever thought that the enlargement of Adam's larynx was due to the forbidden apple* having stuck in his throat, it could not have been until she was in her dotage. If she ever believed that when her infants smiled in sleep, angels were talking to them, it must have been after her expulsion from Eden, for no babies were known in its blissful bowers. If she ever told herself that birds, by raising their heads aloft, say a grace after every draught, she showed an ignorance of ornithological anatomy, which, in the days before she fell, would not have been allowed to remain undissipated.*"Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
