LAST, HENDRIK WILLEM,, Grieving fisher's wives near the coast
LAST, HENDRIK WILLEM,
Grieving fisher's wives near the coast
Groups of people near the coast during a storm. In the foreground a group of women is consoled for the (possible) loss of their hustbands. In the background the storm rages and people are rowing out to sea to rescue survivors. Below the image an eight-line poem in Dutch by Dr. E. Laurillard. Tinted lithograph with accent hand colouring on wove paper, sheet size 375 x 522 mm., image size 235 x 360 mm. Made by Willem Hendrik Last after his own design. Printed by Wed. E. Spanier & Zn. (The Hague) and published in 1868 by D.J. Couvée. The revenue of this print would be used to support the 'Vereeniging tot ondersteuning van Weduwen en Wezen van verongelukte Visschers te Katwijk en Noordwijk aan Zee' (Society for support of Widows and Orphans of shipwrecked Fishermen of Katwijk and Noordwijk aan Zee). Hendrik Willem Last (1817-1873) was a lithographer, draughtsperson and watercolourist. He was the brother of C.C.A. Last. In fair condition. The image and text below quite clean and nicely crisp. However, dampstains in the top and bottom right corners, a crease in the lower right, and a tear from the left margin into the sheet. Surface damage in the top margin. None of these defects affect the image. Some general soiling and scattered foxing.
