Joseph Miseratione Divina Tituli Sancti Laurentii in Lucina S.R. E. Prim. Presb. Card. Puteobonellus, S. Mediol. Eccl. Archiepiscopus
Lucina, Italy, Saint Lucina / Sancti Laurentii, . First Edition. Softcover. Size: Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. In essence, a scarce item indeed, a decree of Cardinal Giuseppe Pozzobonelli which certifies that Lorenzo Cesana, son of Giovanni, born in Olginate (in the Diocese of Milan) on 11 August 1747, is contemplating a marriage that would be contracted outside the Diocese of Milan (aided in translation by Dr. Francesca Nepori). A softpaper broadside roughly the size of a restaurant menu when folded in half, 17 3/4" x 13 3/4", respectively, folded into eighteen panels. Pretty to look at. Text in Italian but mostly Latin. Church's red-stamped insignia in top-middle panel of bottom half, overlapping a fold. Printed, it reads, "Joseph Miseratione Divina Tituli Sancti Laurentii in Lucina S.R.E. Prim. Presb. Card. PUTEOBONELLUS, S. Mediol. Eccl. Archiepiscopus." Four lines follow of fine hand-penned inscription difficult to make out but maybe something like the remarks of a Notary Public (dated 2, January 1780), then "Universis, &c. Fidem facimus, & attestamur, sicuti ex informationibus jussu nostro judicialiter sumptis ad formam Instructionis Sacrae, Supremaeque Congregationis S. Officii, constitit, & constat," which translates as "Universal, &c. We make faith, and attest, as it has been and is established from the information judicially taken at our command in the form of the Sacred Instruction, and of the Supreme Congregation of the Holy Office." Another eight lines of fine penned remarks follow, with tabbed line marks at left. Then at bottom appears, "&c. Dat. Mediolani ex Palatio Archiepiscopali die . . . [filled in] an. 17 Septuagesimi," which translates as "&c. He gives Milan from the Archbishop's Palace on . . [filled in] an. 17 Seventy [1770]. Signed at middle bottom, then signed again at bottom corner. On rear of the broadside is written in pen five additional lines, seemingly having been sent to the Diocesi di Milano, Italy, and dated 1779. The Wikipedia entry about the Church says that "The Minor Basilica of St. Lawrence in Lucina (Italian: Basilica Minore di San Lorenzo in Lucina or simply Italian: San Lorenzo in Lucina; Latin: S. Laurentii in Lucina) is a Roman Catholic parish, titular church, and minor basilica in central Rome, Italy. The basilica is located in Piazza di San Lorenzo in Lucina in the Rione Colonna, about two blocks behind the Palazzo Montecitorio, proximate to the Via del Corso." The entry for the church on Catholic-Hierarchy dot org/diocese/dl105 dot html provides a lengthy genealogy beginning in 1158 of the initial appointment (Alberto de Morra) and subsequent ordinaries, to 2010. The "Joseph" of the decree was Giuseppe Pozzobonelli (11 August 1696 – 27 April 1783); his Wikipedia entry (translated from the original Italian) notes that he was "an Italian cardinal, known for his diplomatic skill in relations between the Holy Roman Empire and the Holy See . . . His eight decades of regency over the archdiocese of Milan made him one of the greatest ecclesiastical figures in eighteenth-century Milan, to the point that his work was compared by many of his contemporaries to that of his illustrious predecessors on the Milanese see such as St. Charles and Frederick Borromeo, in particular in the constancy of pastoral visits and in the works of government and reform" (Wikipedia). All in, a scarce item connecting a diocese and Catholic Church hierarchy to local authorities and a desire to marry.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Alexandris (Cajetanus de)
Confessarius Monialium: Commoda, Brevi, & Practica Methodo Instructus
Venetiis [Venice, Italy], Balleoniana [Paolo Balleoni], 1728. Fourth Edition. Hardcover. Size: 16mo 6" - 7" tall. The title continues: "Circa earum Obligationes, Privilegia... Editio quarta, pluribus in locis locupletata." Thus, the Fourth edition, the First Edition having been published in 1706 and another several after the author's death in 1730, two years after publication of this volume. Designed as a how-to manual for priests who would hear and pronounce upon the confessions of professed nuns. Priests had to hear both their transgressions and the moral dilemmas they sometimes faced, for example, how best to obtain and respond to a confession from a hermaphrodite. All early editions and printings are quite scarce in the trade. Bound in a short 16mo in stature, measuring 6 1/8" x 3 3/4" tall and high, respectively. Latin text throughout, text-block being sewn into the original full white vellum, with cords making for six raised bands. Engraved headers, engraved initials, and quite a lovely engraved vignette at title page. All edges speckled red, faint remains of titles in sepia on spine, classmark labels on front pastedown, symbols indicating its subject field, its shelf position, etc. Generally clean and unmarked of interior but for a seven-line inscription in pen in Latin on front free endpaper. A few ink blots here and there. Previous owner's inscription, neatly rendered on verso in Spanish and Latin in sepia ink, rubber stamp of Biblioteca San Francisco de Tunja on title, and another on page 73. Generally quite crisp and attractive, spine titles being a bit faded, prior, ancient stain on rear board running through into the lower margin of several pages, dissipating quickly. Was once owned by Brother Antoni Noza. His inscription refers to excommunication. Eventually having become a naturalized citizen of the Republic of South Korea, Brother Antoni's/Anthony's Korean name thus became An Sonjae, the Korean language form of "Sudhana," or "the little pilgrim" of the Buddhist scripture The Gandavyuha Sutra (Wikipedia). Anthony was born in 1942 in Cornwall, the United Kingdom, to Nan Albina Green, studied Medieval and Modern languages at Oxford and in 1969 joined the Taize community in France, "a monastic order composed of men from the Protestant, Anglican and Catholic traditions dedicated to spreading the message of trust and reconciliation" (Wikipedia). He also translated and edited a number of Korean authors including poets and theologians. Collated as complete, paginated as title page, frontis matter, 5-515 pp., not including blanks. [Bruzeau]
La Conference Du Diable Avec Luther, Contre le Saint Sacrifice de la Messe, Avec la Refutation D'Un Ecrit Fait Part M. Ereiter, Ministre de M. L'Ambassadeur de Suede, Pour Defendre Ccette Conference
Paris, Jacques Edouard et Charles Saillant, 1760. Nouvelle Edition. . Size: 12mo 7" - 7. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and still relatively sturdy and quite attractive. Potentially having been rebound in the past (the presence of newer decorated endpapers), but full leather over boards, five raised bands to spine, moderate wearing to covers, tips, edges, light scuffing to tips, slight loss to leather on rear panel, but with gilt-tooled titles at spine. It sits handsomely on the shelf. Penultimate endpaper torn at edge but present and intact. Text-block is waffly, but clean and unmarked. Published in Paris by Jacques Edouard and Charles Saillant, 1740, calfskin binding, title-piece in what was likely a red Morocco label. The tome was popular and controversial, appearing first in 1673. It is attributed either to Paul Bruzeau or to Nicolas Pillon, but I'd go with Gershon Legman's bibliographic note at first free endpaper saying ["par Bruzeau"]. The argument is that Martin Luther claimed to have debated with an apparition (Diable) and that, therefore, all Lutheran doctrine can only be inspired by the Devil himself. Mccloskey, Patrick J.
The Street Stops Here - a Year at a Catholic High School in Harlem
Berkeley, California, University of California Press, 2010. First Edition. Hardcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. A superior copy inside and out, being a sterling condition hardcover copy, with unbruised tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear; not ex-library, with neither underlining nor highlighting anywhere. Bright and shiny dust jacket, paper-backed, illustrated, showing only very minor wear, protected by a plastic coat, dust jacket not being price-clipped. Gift-quality condition inside and out. From the publisher's blurb, "'The Street Stops Here' offers a deeply personal and compelling account of a Catholic high school in central Harlem, where mostly disadvantaged (and often non-Catholic) African American males graduate on time and get into college. Interweaving vivid portraits of day-to-day school life with clear and evenhanded analysis, Patrick J. McCloskey takes us through an eventful year at Rice High School, as staff, students, and families make heroic efforts to prevail against society's expectations. McCloskey's riveting narrative brings into sharp relief an urgent public policy question: whether (and how) to save these schools that provide the only viable option for thousands of poor and working-class students - and thus fulfill a crucial public mandate. Just as significantly, "The Street Stops Here" offers invaluable lessons for low-performing urban public schools.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
