[Bruzeau] - La Conference Du Diable Avec Luther, Contre le Saint Sacrifice de la Messe, Avec la Refutation D'Un Ecrit Fait Part M. Ereiter, Ministre de M. L'Ambassadeur de Suede, Pour Defendre Ccette Conference

Paris, Jacques Edouard et Charles Saillant, 1760. Nouvelle Edition. . Size: 12mo 7" - 7. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and still relatively sturdy and quite attractive. Potentially having been rebound in the past (the presence of newer decorated endpapers), but full leather over boards, five raised bands to spine, moderate wearing to covers, tips, edges, light scuffing to tips, slight loss to leather on rear panel, but with gilt-tooled titles at spine. It sits handsomely on the shelf. Penultimate endpaper torn at edge but present and intact. Text-block is waffly, but clean and unmarked. Published in Paris by Jacques Edouard and Charles Saillant, 1740, calfskin binding, title-piece in what was likely a red Morocco label. The tome was popular and controversial, appearing first in 1673. It is attributed either to Paul Bruzeau or to Nicolas Pillon, but I'd go with Gershon Legman's bibliographic note at first free endpaper saying ["par Bruzeau"]. The argument is that Martin Luther claimed to have debated with an apparition (Diable) and that, therefore, all Lutheran doctrine can only be inspired by the Devil himself. Sure. xxii [10], 172 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Good
