Planes are propeller British European Airways and ships refer to wartime damage to docks (not in MONTANARO).

Duodecimo cartonnage Romantique embossed paper over boards with shaped diecut insert of chromolith illustration (edges quite worn/some tearout around the chromolith embossed frame/spine tips worn) 168pp pencil inscription on pastedown & remains of wax seals to same. Belongs to the series Bibliotheque Morale de la Jeunesse sadly in a well worn binding (cf. Gumuchian 1080 calling the 1858 printing the First edition even though it is also published by Megard. Also in a cartonage romantique but with a different chromolith).

ALBUM DE CENT IMAGES D'EPINAL compose pour Garcons No. 2
France, Pellerin & Cie color illustrated throughout in early comic book format of pictures that tell a story with a short caption underneath . folio cloth spined pictorial boards with school boy and satchell carrying a book under his arm on the front cover + 3 boys reading from an images d'epinal book [covers very worn/corners bashed/spine cloth with holes & tears but covers still together] 55 leaves printed one side only starting with a fine parade of Victorian firemen using pumps, ladders and rescuing swooning ladies. This and the last leaf with Gymnastic displays + 4 pages given over to military persons in three or four groupings [Alpine soldiers,cavalry etc] are not stories. Almost all of the other pages are in 16 small pictures making up a story sequence in one page. Some are humorous,some historical,others moral etc. but each is complete in one page.The paper of these Image d'Epinal is rather tanned, a few have traces of pencilling on the blank backside and a few having small tears,usually without any loss,but some with corner creases and sm.corner losses, never affecting any images.Though title implies that there are 100 images this seems to be a Part I volume

BABES IN THE WOOD
London, Sampson Low,Son & co. 1st edition first printing 1861 color printed plates (10) by Wm. Dickes [?using the Baxter process] . 183x132mm Rose blindstamped and pictorial gilt cloth on bevelled boards (corners sl.rubbed/spine and some edges a bit faded] All Edges Gilt 10 leaves printed one side only and with guard blanks in front of each. The pictorial parts of the plates are highly glazed, the text portion printed in small italic letters. A Victorian bookseller's miniature label to pastedown and a very feint but readable inscription to free endpaper.Very neat and clean copy of the first edition of these illustrations which were later reprinted by Bickers.
