ELTE, G.,
Letter of George Elte to Gerard Halwasse begging for money. 24 January 1933.
One page written letter on stationary of Hotel de l'Europe, Mechelen (Belgium) dated 24 January 1933. George Elte writes Gerard Halwasse (antiquarian bookseller in Den Haag) that he resides in a cheap hotel in Mechelen (Malines) without warm water and that he needs 10 gulden (guilders) in addition to the funds his daughter provided. Elte promisses to send Halwasse an expensive book in return. This book is in Paris, hence his desire to return to Paris. He also asks for prints of Boxmeer in order to thank a certain Van Boxmeer for his assistance in his predicament. This letter comes with an "ontvangstbewijs" dated 30 January 1933 from Halwasse to Elte. Suppossedly Halwasse sent the requested amount and/or the print(s). Remarcable example of correspondence between two booksellers. Georg Elte (Den Haag 1875-1937) was the son of Mozes Elte and brother of Meijer Elte, famous booksellers in Den Haag. George owned an antiquarian auctionshouse in de Breestraat in Leiden. In 1933 his fortunes seem to have turned.
