Allegory of the help provided by the city of Amsterdam to the poor Catholics on december the 5th 1787. Charitas sits on a throne with the arms of Amsterdam holding a cornucopia; beside her poor people, a man a woman and a child. Two putti are looking at a sheet of paper with a representation of the house of the indigents in Amsterdam situated on the Keisergracht 384. In the sky the eye of God. Titled above in the center:“DE / MILDDAADIGHEID / AAN / DE DANKBAARE ROOMSCHE ARMEN; / BY DE EERSTE AFGIFTE VAN BROOD, / OP DE GROND / DES GEWEEZEN SCHOUWBURGS / TE AMSTERDAM, / Den vyfden December.“ below the representation: ““t WeLeer VerWoest tooneeL, “t paLeIs Der poezIJ, / strekt V, behoeftIg MensCh! hIer tot een bakkerIJ. / J.F. Plate with allegorical representation of the inauguration of the new theater of Amsterdam the 15th September 1774. The personification of Amsterdam holds a new beehive, in the foreground books with theatrical plays and towards the right two putti are holding a sheet with the representation of the new theater. In the background Apollo and the muses. Titled above:“OP DE INWYDING / VAN DEN / NIEUWEN SCHOUBURG / TE AMSTERDAM, / Den vyftienden September.“ and on the bottom two lines by Delfing:“thans saL De bIJ, op nIeVW, In febVS kVnstkoor zWeeVen, / et“t eeLste,“t WeLk ze“er Leest, Voor Wees en arMen geeVen. / J.F. Personificaiton of Holland between Mars and Mercury
Frontispiece to the second volume of the History of Holland by J. Le Clerc, published in three volumes in 1730 (Geschiedenissen der Vereenigde Nederlanden). The personification of Holland is sitting holding arrows in her hands, on the left Mars and on the right Mercury. A lion is lying under the woman. On a drape hanging towards the lower part of the composition the title reads:'GESCHIEDENISSEN / DER / VEREENIGDE NEDERLANDEN / DOOR / MR. JEAN LE CLERC. / TOM II.' At the feet of Mars: 'G de Lairesse inv.'; at the feet of Mercury: 'I. v. Munnichuysen sculp.'l Etching and engraving on paper; margins; platemark: 297 x 186 mm; total: 345 x 222 mm. Some dirt and foldings on the very end margins, otherwise very fine impression. PLIT013
