Includes reporting on the First Vatican Council (with numerous fine engravings depicting Pope Pius IX and the ceremonies of the Council) and a review of LOTHAIR by Benjamin Disraeli. Contains plenty of fine engravings, including a full-page portrait of Charles Dickens, ladies' fashions of the day, and much more. Measures approx. 16" x 11.75". The folding Oxford plate is present but it is detached and torn into about a half dozen pieces. .

In the front is a foldout engraving from a piece by Heywood Hardy called "The Squire's Favourite"; it has split along a bottom fold and has been repaired with tape. Includes a two-page spread of the sinking of the ship Daphne, one of Gloucester Cathedral, and several more in nice shape for removal and framing. Also contains a serialized story called THE CANON'S WARD by James Payn. The volume as a whole measures approx. 16" x 12.

Dampstaining on pages 531-554 (the entire Nov. 5 issue). Pages 781-784 are detached, and the rear hinge is cracking. Rest of pages are still attached. A worn but readable copy, with no missing pages. Volume 91 of THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, with weekly issues spanning July 2 through December 31, 1887. Contains reporting on Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee; a multi-part article by journalist Walter B. Harris titled "The British Mission to Morocco," which is lavishly illustrated; an article by Amelia B. Edwards about archaeological excavations in Egypt; the death of Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind; and ongoing unrest in Ireland. Among the many fine engravings are numerous views of the Jubilee festivities; a 2-page spread depicting the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne; impressive views of British ships at the Jubilee naval review; a 2-page color plate depicting the village of Mapledurham; scenes of natives along the Congo River; and a large foldout portrait of Otto von Bismarck.
