Handbill for Command Performance of Bulwer-Lytton's "Money" Given for Queen Victoria
1854. Handbill for a command performance of a comedy by Edward Bulwer-Lytton called MONEY, given for Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle on January 12, 1854. Printed on a single folded sheet of lace-trimmed paper with an embossed imperial insignia at the top. The final name on the cast list, the director's wife, has been crossed off and a different name written in (perhaps an understudy). Mild yellowing down the right side on the front; horizontal crase and one corner crease on the back. Very mild wear on the right edge. Otherwise in well-preserved shape for its age. This performance of MONEY was directed by Shakespearian actor Charles Kean (1811-1868). Very Good .

Volume 56 of the ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, containing all issues from January 1 through June 25, 1870. Includes reporting on the First Vatican Council (with numerous fine engravings depicting Pope Pius IX and the ceremonies of the Council) and a review of LOTHAIR by Benjamin Disraeli. Contains plenty of fine engravings, including a full-page portrait of Charles Dickens, ladies' fashions of the day, and much more. Measures approx. 16" x 11.75". The folding Oxford plate is present but it is detached and torn into about a half dozen pieces. .

In the front is a foldout engraving from a piece by Heywood Hardy called "The Squire's Favourite"; it has split along a bottom fold and has been repaired with tape. Includes a two-page spread of the sinking of the ship Daphne, one of Gloucester Cathedral, and several more in nice shape for removal and framing. Also contains a serialized story called THE CANON'S WARD by James Payn. The volume as a whole measures approx. 16" x 12.
