The word 'carol' comes from the old French, carole, a type of song originally written and played as a courtly dancing song. Carols gradually assumed a more popular form, telling stories and celebrating religious themes for all seasons until the late 19th century, when their present close association with Christmas became firmly established. The book offers a diverse selection of 19th century period carols, folk songs and lullabies well-known and less well-known, all beautifully illustrated with contemporary images, to be shared and sung in celebration of Christ's birth.
