The first part ( 240 pp ) dealt with the health situation in Belgium (not present here). The second part (on offer here) is complete as such and deals with the situation in the Congo Free State. It contains detailed information with statistics (meteorological, geographical and medical) on a large number of colonial settlements in Congo and describes also in detail the climate of Congo. Publisher's full red cloth, gilt lettering and medallion on spine and cover, t.e.g. Illustrated with 16 tissue-protected photogravures, and a facsimile letter. Title page in red and black. Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) was the most accomplished and celebrated 19th-century African explorer. He was a Welsh-American journalist and explorer who was famous for his exploration of central Africa and his search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone. Upon finding Livingstone, Stanley reportedly asked, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" Stanley is also known for his search for the source of the Nile, his work in and development of the Congo Basin region in association with King Leopold II of the Belgians, and commanding the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. He was knighted in 1899.. Former owner's small address label on fep, head and heel of spine lightly worn, sans map, else fine; tight, square, and clean. Lacking the map at the end. VERY GOOD. Fine caricature portrait of the Anglo-American journalist and colonizer in Central Africa Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904). The meeting of Stanley and Livingstone is one of the high points of African exploration using the phrase: 'Dr. Livingstone, I presume'. Stanley arrived to a heroic welcome in New York on 20-11-1872.

During this fatal expedition Stanley explored the African Great Lakes (Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganykia, the Lake Edward), and followed the Lualaba river and the Congo river to the Atlantic coast and finally reached a Portugese outpost Boma at the mouth of the river Congo in August 1877.
