An interesting travel work on the United States, published by the Religious Tract Society.In this work, Samuel Manning explores the States and gives a detailed history, highlighted throughout by detailed engravings. Illustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title, one double paged plate, twenty-two plates, and many full-paged and in-text engravings.Undated, dated from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library.Collated, complete. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities, with a small amount of loss to the tail of the fore edge of the front board. Minor rubbing to the spine and extremities. A few light marks and a little rubbing to the boards. Front hinge is starting but firm. Rubbing to the paste downs and endpapers. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots, mostly to the first and last few pages. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .

The boards are lightly scored and worn, with splits to the leading corners. The spine body has been completely torn away, with the binding and the remains of the spine material exposed. Partial splits to the hinges. Foxing on the pages throughout. The binding remains intact. Interior in good condition for age, with clear text and illustrations. CM. Acceptable.

Undated, dated using Copac. This scarce work is bound in the publisher's original cloth binding. With a prize bookplate to the front pastedown that reads 'Edinburgh Ladies College. First Prize for Geometry - 1st Cl. 1st Div. Awarded to Miss Jane W. D. Gillon. Robt. Robertson N.A. Master. Session 1877-78. David Pryde M.A. L.L.D. Head Master&apos. Illustrated by numerous eminent artist throughout, most notably Gustave Dore. With 30 full page illustrations and numerous in-text illustrations throughout. Gustave Doré was a artist, printmaker and illustrator. Considered a prodigy at the age of five, Doré's artistic career started young, and at aged fifteen he began work as a caricature artist for the French paper, 'Le Journal pour rire&apos. It was not long before Doré began to receive commissions, creating illustrations for the work of Milton and Dante, which feature in this volume. Hugely successful, he secured a five year contract with the publishers Grant & Co. for which he was paid the large sum of £10,000 a year. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally sound, with light bumping to the head and tail of the spine, light fading to the spine and patches of rubbing to the joints. Large mark to the rear board. Light offsetting and spotting to the front and rear endpapers and pastedowns, with a bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot.
