In Middlemarch beschrijft George Eliot het reilen en zeilen van een aantal individuen uit de Engelse middenklasse in een (niet bestaande) provinciestad rond 1830. In de negentiende eeuw kende de Engelse middenklasse een grote mate van sociale gelaagdheid. Zo waren er de landeigenaren, de middenstanders, de vrije beroepsoefenaren, geestelijkheid en nog een aantal andere groeperingen, allen ruim vertegenwoordigd in Middlemarch. Eliot vertelt de verhalen van haar romanfiguren met zoveel liefde voor detail dat elk van hen voor het oog van de lezer tot leven komt. Ze worden stuk voor stuk geschetst tegenover een persoonlijke achtergrond en voorzien van een levensgeschiedenis. Of het nu gaat om hoofdfiguren, zoals Dorothea Brooke en Tertius Lydgate, of zogenaamde bijfiguren, als mevrouw Cadwallader en Farebrother, ze hebben, zonder uitzondering, hun individuele karakteristieke eigenaardigheden, idealen en verwachtingen. Deze individualiteit wordt niet zelden gevangen in hun woordgebruik en beeldspraak. Eliots dialogen hebben dan ook de levensechtheid van een hedendaags filmscript. Een ander bewijs van Eliots vakmanschap is dat ze erin geslaagd is om zoveel figuren geloofwaardig samen te brengen in de elkaar overlappende sociale netwerken van het provinciestadje. Op deze manier kon zij thema's als idealisme en ambitie, integriteit, standsverschil, religie en zelfinzicht niet alleen aan de orde stellen in de levensverhalen van haar romanfiguren maar ook voor de lezer belichten in hun morele en sociologische samenhang. Middlemarch is geen boek om achteloos open te slaan. Het is veeleer een wereld die de lezer binnenstapt om vervolgens vele vertrouwde figuren tegen het lijf te lopen (zij het dat ze een andere naam hebben).
