The edition was reprinted from its serialisation in the magazine 'Halfpenny Journal', serialised from November 1861 to March 1862. Signed by Jennifer Carnell to the title page, who contributed an introduction to this volume, and who runs the Sensation Press, which is dedicated to reprinting Braddon's works.In the original unclipped dust wrapper'The Octoroon: or, The Lily of Louisiana' is described as "a lurid tale of race, slaverty, crime, and miscegenation in the Southern states of America". The novel follows Cora Leslie, a young woman of mixed heritage, who was educated in Britain, and only learns about her mother's slave origins when she returns to her father's plantation in Louisiana. Illustrated with the occasional engraving.
