London, T. Evans and P. Elmsley, 1778. Leather. A ten volume set of works featuring the dramatic writing of the renaissance playwrights Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher. Complete in 10 volumes. Scarce to find a complete set. Featuring the dramatics works of Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher. The worked collaboratively on numerous plays including 'The Woman Hater', 'The Maid's Tragedy', and 'Love's Pilgrimage&apos. The pair began writing for children, and later progresses to writing for The King's Men, the group to which Shakespeare belonged for many years. There were believed to have lived together until Beaumont's marriage. The pairs creating relationship ended when Beaumont became ill in the early 17th century. John Fletcher in particular is well recognised as a successor of Shakespeare in regards to his position in the King's Men. After the death of Shakespeare, Fletcher would go on to write for the company until his own death in 1625. In total the set includes the plays, 'Wild-Goose Chase', 'Lovers' Progress', 'Double Marriage', 'Maid in the Mill', 'Tragedy of Bonduca', 'Fair Maid of the Inn' and 'Coxcomb' among many others. With additional notes and critical works by a variety of commentators. Illustrated with 54 engravings throughout, including a frontispiece to each volume. Collated complete. With the binders stamp to the front pastedown of 'Tyrrell's Pty. Sydney.' The bookplate of 'Athol H Lewis' to the front pastedown, with the image of gallows with the caption reads 'Sad end of a man who failed to return a book belonging to Athol H Lewis&apos. Rebacked, in a full calf binding. Externally generally smart. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and also to the extremities, resulting in a small amount of loss to the leather. The spine labels to volume II and V are lacking, with loss to each of the remaining spine labels heaviest to volume I and IV. The front and rear boards of volume I are detached but present. Front boar of volume II is detached but present. Backstrip to volume II is beginning to lift to the head and tail. Crack to the head of the rear joint of volume III. Large crack to the front joint of volume VI, with risk of the front board becoming detached. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Light offsetting to the front and rear pastedowns. The front and rear hinges of each volume are strained, failing to volumes I and I, resulting in the previous mentioned detached boards. Front hinge of volume IV notable strained. Internally generally firmly bound. Binding to volume I has failed, with the text block split in two to page 114,held together by the backstrip only. Pages are generally clean with instances of spotting, and light offsetting caused by the engraved plates. Good Only . Ill.: Various. Good Only .

Does not appear to be the second collected edition, lacking woodcut printers' devices on title-page; therefore it must be the first collected edition (still different than the 1647 edition). This is the second edition, revised edition from the first printing (1647) , as stated in the Booksellers Note after title-page. Manuscript note at end of "The Elder Brother" and other minor amounts of marginalia. Page 143 numbered as 135. Bottom corner of page 285 gone, affecting 8 lines of text on 285 amd 9 on 286; Pages 366/365 bound backwards (possibly, 366 comes first, with page number on spine side of sheet, same with 365, which follows. After p. 578, the pagination re-starts with p. 1 and is thus noted: second page 11 mis-numbered as 1; page 15 un-numbered; pp 59/60 on two consecutive sheets, each with unique text followed by 63/64, etc. p. 85 small corner lower right torn off, no loss of text; p. 106 followed by repeating numbers 91-94, then p. 11 onward no repeating text; p. 201 mis-numbered as 102; p. 207 mis-numbered as 107; p. 292 is 293, and 293 is 292; significant ear with significant loss pp. 295/296 possibly 19 lines of text both sides affected; p. 297 mis-numbered 304; p. 431 mis-numbered 442; p. 459 mis-numbered 462; Sheets 469/470 and 471/472 have significant but ancient replacements to lower corners with manuscript continuation of the missing text. A few minor tears in page edges early on mostly; p. 475 followed by 452, 453, rsumes at 479 with minor loss to edges of sheets and manuscript replacement of lost printed text; minor loss of edge text at bases of pp. 485/486 and 487/488 due to tear with loss; pp. 501/502 and 503/504 have minor tears at lower edge with very minor text loss; p. 545/546 replaced with a manuscript copy on period paper in a period hand; same with pp.551/552.
