Alcott, Louisa May (1832-1888)
Good Wives; a Sequel to Little Women
London, Ye Mitre Press (London, 30, Fetter Lane) | Printed by F. Welstead & Sons, N.D. [Circa 189?]. Early Printing. Hardcover. pp. [1-4], 5-192. Duodecimo. measuring 12 x 18.5 cm. Publisher's original stamped forest-green cloth with stylized gilt lettering to the spine, and front board. Light bumps to spine ends and tips, small superficial perforation to the front board immediately below the gilt title (unaffecting text), spine very lightly darkened, else, cloth extremities remain in remarkably good condition in light of its age. Colourful period prize bookplate from the Salvation Army (addressed to a 'Kate McGrath', dated 1904) affixed to the front pastedown, short neat period ink inscription to the ffep, light foxing to endpapers only. Text-block uniformly age-toned, however, clean and unmarked and without blemish with tight, sound binding. Overall, very good.
¶ An uncommon edition of Good Wives, the sequel to Louisa May Alcott’s beloved coming-of-age novel Little Women. First published in 1869, this early - though later - printing was issued by the little-known British publisher Ye Mitre Press. Corresponds to OCLC #220541562, which, at the time of cataloguing, records twenty-one institutional holdings and suggests a publication date in the 1890s. Not located in the British Library.
