Ganzleinen der Zeit mit goldgeprägtem Rückentitel. Einbände berieben, Rücken leicht geblichen. Seiten papierbedingt unterschiedlich stark gegilbt, teilweise etwas stockfleckig. Alte handschriftliche Signaturen und gelöschte Stempel auf Titelseiten. 2 Falttafeln in Band 1 mit Fehlstellen (8 x 9 cm und 26 x 4 cm, der eigentliche Inhalt Landkarten ist aber praktisch nicht betroffen). Insgesamt noch guter Zustand. Bound in full tree calf. Two volume, complete set. Illustrated with an engraved title page, monochrome frontispieces and forty copper engraved plates to 'Volume I' and sixty-seven to 'Volume II', including three folding plates with two being the rare folding plates of snakes. Collated complete. Includes the two rare and often missing folding plates of snakes which depict a common Viper, 'Esculapian serpent' and the rattle snake. This popular and influential work on Natural History was written by Georges Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, a French naturalist. The work details the history of a variety of animals including reptiles, fish, birds and humans and provides histories of other natural subjects such as weather, mountains, earth quakes and volcanoes. Bound in full tree calf. Externally sound with fading, rubbing and cracking to the spines, front joints weak with boards held by cords and rear joints starting, rubbing and bumping to the extremities, rubbing to the joints and slight marks to the boards. Bookplate belonging to a 'Kinglake' to the front pastedowns. Internally front blank disbound but present to 'Volume II' and weak to 'Volume I', otherwise generally firm.
