He also excelled in painting and Han studies. His pottery work is varied, including porcelain, celadon and Akae ware. He produced a lot of modern green-tea utensils, referred today as "Mokubei style" tea sets. As a result of his commitment to Chinese ceramics, he created a world of his own in making copies of Chinese ware. His representative work "Bokutansai Sansui-zu" and other works have been classified as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Mokubei used numerous other names but Robei was the one he used most. 'Ro' means deaf and 'bei' is from Mokubei. He became deaf from the noise and heat of working near his kiln. Scarce.

SCHMITT, HELENE:
Stickereien (Embroideries). Entwürfe von Helen Schmitt. Auf Stein gezeichnet von der Verfasserin. Parts I-III (all published). Basel, Wassermann & Schäublin & Dresden, In Kommission bei der Verlagshandlung Wilhelm Baensch, 1906-7.
. Large folio (41 x 52 cm). Comprises twenty-four beautiful coloured lithographed plates (one double-page) printed on strong cardboard of different colours, some highlighted in gold. Together with one leaf of foreword and three leaves with explanatory text and photographic illustrations. As issued in loose sheets in original illustrated stiff wrappers, with some wear and neat restorations. Housed in specially made cloth portfolio by Atelier Devauchelle in Paris. First and only edition, self-published by the artist. We assume in a very small number.A gorgeous Art Nouveau work with decorative ornamental designs for embroidery but could also be used for other techniques; wood painting and carving, book covers, furnitures, curtains, clothes, etc. Helene Schmitt was a teacher of embroidery at the Frauenarbeitsschule in Basel. Some of her works were exhibited at the Basel Trade Exhibition of 1901. According to Schmitt's foreword: "The designs for embroidery, which are available here in lithographic form, are a selection from the drawings that I designed as head of the class for coloured embroidery at the Woman's Work School in Basel over the past 5 years. Part of the work was exhibited at the Basel Trade Exhibition from 1901 for the first time. Since then I have mostly reworked the designs and now publish them in this new form ... The patterns were created for the needs of my pupils and were implemented in the school itself. Our school is not a technical school and the embroidery courses are attended by the schoolchildren for a longer or shorter period according to their wish. One will therefore find among these sheets, in addition to technically very simple works, also more complicated ones; however, the technical requirements never exceed the level of what can be acquired in a similarly organized school. I know that the artistic appeal of such women's work does not just depend on the template, but essentially also on how much taste and care is put into the technical part of the work. Unfortunately, very little of these intentions can be seen in the lithographic plates. Photographic illustrations have therefore been added to the brief explanations of the text sheets. They should show the effect of the whole and clarify the technical treatment. In addition, the text about the technique and the material will provide the necessary information ... The drawings should also have some value for non-embroiderers who know what is important using a pattern. Most are easy to implement in a different technique; some of the borders are suitable for wood painting ... " A wonderful work in genuine Art Nouveau style. A few plates with small crease at corners but overall a very good set. Very rare in the market.

. 8vo size (24 x 16.5 cm). Complete with 27 leaves, double folded in the Japanese fashion. Comprises fifty-four coloured wood cut plates. Bound in the fukuro-toji style. Original wrappers, rubbed and soiled, title label on front cover, with some loss. First few leaves with some staining at lower margin, otherwise a very good copy.First edition of Kamisaka Sekka's first work of a series of design manuals (zuan-ch›). Towards the end of the 19th century, this kind of design book became very popular in Kyoto, centre of the leading Japanese textile design and production as well as of printing. The books themselves were made by skilled artists who made the woodblocks, and hand-printed the sheets. Kamisaka Sekka was one of Japan's leading artists and designers at this time. He became known for his courageous and visually dynamic designs. He initially worked in the traditional Rinpa style, a Japanese genre based on nature which emerged in the early 17th century, evolving in the early 20th century into the Neo-Rinpa style. A scarce, well-preserved design manual created by "the father of Japanese modern design".

SHIMIZU, SEIFU (Illustrator) & NISHIZAWA, TEHIKO (Illustrator):
Unai no Tomo (The Child's Friends). Ten volumes. Kyoto, Unsodo, Meiji 24-Taisho (1891-1923).
. A complete set comprising ten volumes devoted to Japanese traditional children's toys. Comprises more than 420 pages with numerous coloured woodcuts of toys with printed captions in Japanese. Leaves are folded in the traditional Japanese manner. Bound in original decorated paper wrappers, paper labels on upper covers. (First six volumes in beige paper, and the remaining four in orange paper, as issued). Housed in a very delicate, custom-made box. First edition of this highly artistic and important work sometimes considered "the Bible for all serious toy amateurs". Seifu Shimizu (1851-1913) was a student of Hiroshige III and studied poetry with Kozando Sangetsu. He was the leading Meiji collector of omocha, toys handmade from common materials. In 1880 he founded the Takeuma-kai (Hobbyhorse Club) dedicated to "the merry and nostalgic enjoyment of children's toys" and in 1906 he curated the Kodomo Hakurankai (Children's Exhibition) which was the first known exhibition of Japanese folk toys in Japan. Shimizu studied and prepared himself for this work for a long time. He died during the publication, but his manuscript was found and four additional volumes (in orange-coloured wrappers) were published by Tekiho Nishizawa. The woodcuts are of very high quality and printed in bright, intense colours. Some of the prints have additional hand-applied colour, and others are highlighted with gold and silver. A wonderful copy of this important ethnographic work. Uncommon, especially complete in first edition. Hundreds of color plates, mostly single page, with a few double page as well. The pigments are very bright, and include some metallic inks. The overall colors, condition and printing of the set are very good. An excellent resource for mingei as well as the history of toys, as the images are all captioned in Japanese.
