Falque Rey is primarily a Latinist rather than a historian, but she has done historians an immense good tune. The introduction to her edition devotes twenty-four pages to the ?authors and the work?, another twenty pages to the description of the manuscripts, fourteen to the manuscript transmission, and a final eighteen to the history of the text. Falque Rey has a faultless command of the bibliography of the subject, narrowly considered; and her studies of the manuscripts and their transmission, in addition to the edited text itself, are invaluable. Both the author and the editors of the Corpus Christianorum are to be congratulated upon the production of an edition which represents a major contribution to the progress of Spanish medieval studies.? Daarna zitten gedurende meer dan honderd jaar voornamelijk rivaliserende generaals op het pluche, soms afgewisseld door een onbekwame zoon, een perverse krankzinnige of een oude senator. Regelmatig grijpen aan de randen van het rijk tegenkeizers de macht. Hun biografieën zijn verzameld in de Historia Augusta, waarschijnlijk ontstaan tegen het eind van de vierde eeuw. De historische betrouwbaarheid ervan lijkt dubieus: veel nevenfiguren en ?officiële? stukken zijn fictief. Daarnaast verwachtte men in de oudheid van biografieën iets anders dan van geschiedschrijving: belangrijk is de beschrijving van het karakter en de levenswijze van de hoofdfiguur. Over veel van de besproken personen hebben we nauwelijks ander bronnenmateriaal, zodat de Historia nog altijd van belang is voor historici. Verder vertelt het boek over het dagelijks leven in het Romeinse Rijk, de politieke besluitvorming, een senaat die verwordt tot een verzameling hielenlikkers, conflicten met buurlanden en binnenvallende volkeren. De rust keert pas weer aan het eind van de derde eeuw, wanneer het rijk gesplitst wordt in een oostelijk en westelijk deel met elk een eigen keizer. (Publisher's information).
