A fifth volume was started but only the first issue appeared dated May 1885 and this is here bound in the back of volume four. The title continues " for the Intercommunication of Antiquaries, Bibliophiles, and other Investigators into the History and Literature of the counties of Lancaster, Chester etc. " A mine of out of the way information. Old half leather bindings, rubbed, but sound except that the front cover of volume four has cracked at the spine and is strengthened internally with a strip of paper. A thoroughlyl useable set. One important feature is the detailed description of the various sets of early 19th century views of Manchester.

London, Simpkin,Marshall and Co, 1844. Two volumes, pp. 288, 282. The first edition with a London imprint (though actually printed in Heywood and Manchester). First issued in parts between 1839 and 1840, then in volume form in 1842. In this edition the glossary is withdrawn from volume one and a table of contents is added, and four extra chapters dated 1844 are added to volume two. Original cloth a little rubbed, but sound. Contents a bit used, with some dirty thumb marks, but still an acceptable pair.
