ALIGHIERI, DANTE; WHEELER, C.E. (TRANSLATOR)
The Divine Comedy translated by C.E. Wheeler: Hell, Purgatory & Paradise (3 Volumes)
London & New York, J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. / E.P. Dutton & Co. 1911, First Edition. Purple Cloth. Book, pp. vi, 264; vi, 290; vi, 282 + 3 (tissue covered frontispiece portraits in each volume). A mixed set comprised of an ex-library first edition copy of Hell in secondary binding with top edge of text-block stained & spine lettering both in black ink. The usual library treatments have been removed or obscured by pasting the ffep onto the front pastedown with only the slightly rubbed unfaded patch at the tail of the spine remaining. By contrast, both Purgatory & Paradise are in first issue binding with spine lettering, text-block top edges & "Dante" inside a laurel wreath on upper board; all in gilt. Spines sunned, cloth slightly soiled & a little rubbed at extremities. Some light scattered foxing at fore edges & offsetting at end papers. Hell & Paradise both have previous owner's names & contemporary dates while Paradise is from the library of historian & author, Dorothy Gardiner. Texts of all three volumes are clean. A scarce full set of this relatively uncommon translation. Very Good.
