Cory, Charles B.
The Birds of Haiti and San Domingo.
Boston: Estes and Lauriat, 1885. First edition. Pp. (2), 7-198; with 22 hand-colored plates and 1 monochrome map, 2 text-figures. Recent one-half straight-grained green morocco leather, spine with five raised bands titled in gilt on black leather and red leather labels in two compartments, over English pale green marbled boards with pale green endpapers (original printed green wrappers bound in at rear), 4to (287 x 225 cm). This volume provides the synonymy, description of plumage, and notes for each species. The hand-colored plates in this copy are particularly bright and clean. This work was issued in four parts dated 1844 (parts 1-3) and 1885 (part 4); the edition was limited to 300 copies only. There is no limitation page in the volume but the front wrapper of each part is labeled with a small red number of 291 (part 1), 245 (part 2), 168 (part 3) and 256 (part 4). Since the highest of these numbers is 291, it seems to confirm an edition of only 300 copies. The wrapper of part 1 has been slightly trimmed with no effect to the text. The title page bears the small name-stamp of ornithologist Ed N. Harrison. There are no other ownership marks of any kind. See also Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 87, Wood, p. 300 and Zimmer, p. 138. The rear side (verso) of some plates show a touch of faint foxing, all of the text and hand-colored plates are very bright and clean, the recent half-morocco binding is very attractive; a tight and clean copy in near fine condition..

Count de la Cepede (translated by Robert Kerr)
The Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds and Serpents. Arranged and Published from the Papers and Collections of the Count De Buffon, in 4 volumes complete
Edinburgh: printed by Alex. Smellie for T. Cadel, W. Davies and W. Creech, 1802. First English edition. Pp. xliii, 420; xxiv, 345; iv, 383; xii, 282; with 45 of 48 copper-engraved plates of crocodiles, serpents, lizards, turtles, etc. (volume I lacks plate 2 and volume IV lacks plates 1 and 2; these 3 plates were not removed - they were never bound-in by the publisher). Contemporary full green morocco leather, spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt on dark red morocco labels in two compartments and with elaborate gilt designs in the other four compartments, front and rear leather boards blind-stamped with elaborate diagonal line patterns, set off by gilt panel lines, all outer board edges decorated with gilt patterns, all page edges are marbled to match the marbled endpapers, 8vo. This is the first English translation of the Lacepede's major herpetological opus entitled Histoire Naturelle des Quadrupedes Ovipares et al Serpens originally issued in two large quarto volumes in 1788-1790. This was the first comprehensive world summary of amphibians and reptiles. Even today, it still has useful historical information. Lacepede's work remained very influential until the publication of Dumeril and Bibron Erpetologie Generale in the early 1800s (modified after Adler - Contributions to the History of Herpetology, volume 1). A very attractively-bound and uniform set. Signature of Henry Haffey on first text page of each volume; could be Henry Haffey, Esq., of Bath, formerly of Armagh. No other ownership marks and few signs of use. Some scattered light foxing mostly to the rear (blank) side of some plates, offsetting from some plates to their facing text-pages and offsetting from the text pages to a few plates; a very bright and clean copy in near fine condition..

Cox, Philip G. and Hautier, Lionel (editors)
Evolution of the Rodents: Advances in Phylogeny, Functional Morphology and Development
New York: Cambridge University Press, 2015. First edition. Pp. xiv, 611; numerous black-and-white photos, line-drawings, graphs and maps, 16-page color section of photos and diagrams at center of book (p. 466). Pictorial color laminated boards (hardcover), lg 8vo. This is the hardcover first edition. From the series: Cambridge Studies in Morphology and Molecules, New Paradigms in Evolutionary Biology. The widespread use of mouse models in developmental, behavioural and genetic studies has sparked wider interest in rodent biology as a whole. This book brings together the latest research on rodents to better understand the evolution of both living and extinct members of this fascinating group. Topics analysed include the role of molecular techniques in the determination of robust phylogenetic frameworks; how geometric morphometric methods help quantify and analyse variation in shape; and the role of developmental biology in elucidating the origins of skeletal elements and the teeth. The editors unite these disciplines to present the current state of knowledge in rodent biology, whilst setting the landscape for future research. This book highlights interdisciplinary links across palaeontology, developmental biology, functional morphology, phylogenetics and biomechanics, making it a valuable resource for evolutionary biologists in all fields (from the back cover). No ownership marks. A fine (new) copy..
