ADAMS, DOUGLAS
Mostly Harmless
New York: Harmony Books, 1992. 1st American Edition; 1st Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 0517577402. Illustrated by Peter Cross. Cover Art; This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Near Fine dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is crisp and clean. "It's very easy to get a little disheartened when your planet has been blown up, the woman you love has vanished in a misunderstanding about the nature of space-time, the spaceship you are on crashes in flames on a remote and Bob-fearing planet and all you have to fall back on are a few simple sandwich-making skills. However, instead of being disheartened, Arthur Dent makes the terrible mistake of starting to enjoy life a bit and, immediately, all hell breaks loose." "After leaving university Adams moved back to London, determined to break into TV and radio as a writer. An edited version of the Footlights Revue appeared on BBC2 television in 1974. A version of the Revue performed live in London's West End led to Adams being discovered by Monty Python's Graham Chapman. The two formed a brief writing partnership, earning Adams a writing credit in episode 45 of Monty Python for a sketch called "Patient Abuse". He is one of only two people outside the original Python members to get a writing credit (the other being Neil Innes). The sketch plays on the idea of mind-boggling paper work in an emergency, a joke later incorporated into the Vogons' obsession with paperwork. Adams and Chapman also co-wrote the "Marilyn Monroe" sketch which appeared on the soundtrack album of Monty Python and the Holy Grail." ; Vol. 5. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket .

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1975. 1st American Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. ISBN: 0671221078. Illustrated by David A. Goddard. Color Illustrations; This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is mostly clean and bright, though there is some light toning to the cover edges. "Adams originally began telling the story that would become Watership Down to his two daughters on a car trip. They eventually insisted that he publish it as a book. He began writing in 1966, taking two years to complete it. In 1972, after four publishers and three writers' agencies turned down the manuscript, Rex Collings agreed to publish the work. The book gained international acclaim almost immediately for reinvigorating anthropomorphic fiction with naturalism. Over the next few years Watership Down sold over a million copies worldwide. Adams won both of the most prestigious British children's book awards, one of six authors to do so: the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. In 1974, following publication of his second novel, Shardik, he left the Civil Service to become a full-time author. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1975." AMES AERONAUTICAL LABORATORY / NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR AERONAUTICS
Group of 16 Black and White Photographs from the Naca, Ames Aeronautical Laboratory at Moffett Field, Ca C1944-1958
Moffett Field, CA: National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, 0. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This group of sixteen 8" x 10" black and white photographs from the NACA Ames Aeronautical Laboratory all have the NACA logo and photograph identification inside the photo and an identifier notation at the bottom edge of the white outer border. The photos themselves mostly cover the the use of Schlieren photography at supersonic or subsonic speeds or the wind tunnels in which the photography was produced. The photographs are all in Very Good+ condition. Two of the photographs have ink stamped designation from NACA which has been crossed out with blue pen. Unfortunately the photos are undated but can be positively dated between 1944 and 1958. "On 9 August 1939, as World War II began, Congress authorized the construction of a second National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) laboratory for urgent research in aircraft structures. Ground was broken for the laboratory at Moffett Field, California, in December 1939 and operations began in early 1941. NACA named the facility "Ames Aeronautical Laboratory" in 1944 in honor of Dr. Joseph S. Ames, leading aerodynamicist and former president of Johns Hopkins University. Wind tunnels are central to Ames' history. Several wind tunnels were opened in the 1940s to test and refine aircraft, guided missiles, satellites, and reentry bodies. Of particular note are three tunnels later designated key national resources. The 40 x 80-foot wind tunnel opened in June 1944 to conduct aircraft development work. The 12-foot subsonic wind tunnel, opened in July 1946. The Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel enabled Ames to conduct new research; almost all NASA manned space vehicles, including the Space Shuttle, were tested in the Unitary." (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .
