Written when he was sixty-six years old, this is probably the last book which Markham wrote, and is one of his scarcest. "The practical instruction which he proceeds to give to the would-be-archer, of the bow and its use, the shooting-glove, the string, the shaft, the steel of the arrow, the feather, and the arrow-head, is reminiscent of Asham and may indeed be derived from his Toxophilus."—Poynter. Only two other copies have appeared at auction over the last 70 years, the Macclesfield copy sold by Sotheby's 14th April 2005 lot 1311 £6,600 and the Fox Pointe copy sold by Forum Auctions 10th July 2019 lot 104 £5000. First Edition, 12mo, (xii), 154 pp. including the initial license leaf, with the contemporary bookplate of John Trotter, Edinburgh Lawyer, clean tear in A4 (no loss), generally a little browned, contemporary sheep, a little worn, lower joint slightly tender. The first of at least nine editions of this popular little book of secrets. The last dozen pages comprise "A miscellany of rare and curious secrets not yet toucht upon," and "Another miscellany of rare and curious experiments, useful and profitable, and altogether pleasant." These include such tricks and illusions as "To cause water to ascend," "To carry a jug... sticking without anything, unto the palm of the hand," "To break a stick upon the rim of two glasses, and not break the glasses," "How to make water boil and sparkle," "To make Letters that will soon vanish," how to achieve a strike-out at nine-pins, and the way to find out "any number under 10, being thought upon." This seventeenth-century first edition is rare, all later editions were published in the eighteenth-century. Wing locates copies at BL, Durham, NYPL, Free Library, Folger and Yale, to which the ESTC adds Illinois. Toole-Stott adds the copies owned by Dr. Grossman and Harold Adrian Smith (the latter now at Brown University). A very good copy, with Trotter's contemporary purchase note on the endpaper: "Cost twelve pence from Rot. Allane Bookseller & binder in Edro. [i.e. Edinburgh] 10. Octo. 96." Trotter has added page numbers to the title-page to form a sort of table of contents. John White went on to publish "Hocus Pocus: or, a Rich Cabinet of Legerdemain...", c. 1710. First edition, 8vo (212 x 125 mm), xv, [1], [17]-234, [2]pp., errata leaf at end, engraved frontispiece and engraved map stained, text age-toned with occasional foxing, cont. half-calf, later cloth reback, corners rubbed. This is an authentic account of the life of the missionary George Vason who was one of the first ten Christian missionaries to arrive in Tonga. He left the missionaries at Tonga and lived among the natives for four years. He began to dress and live as a Tongan, and married one of the native girls. He built up an estate and became a prosperous Tongan gentlemen until the beginning of the civil wars in 1799. He was tattooed, and looked and spoke like a Tongan. He escaped the wars on the ship, Royal Admiral, and returned to Nottingham where he died in 1838. He told his story to James Orange and only two versions have been printed, this one in 1810 and one in 1840. His description of Tonga at the end of the eighteenth century is important in that it precedes William Mariner's longer account published in 1817, but the two accounts give uniquely objective reports of Tonga before and during the civil war. This is Crompton's chief work and the first English law book devoted exclusively to the Royal courts, L'authoritie is a guide to all the courts then in existence, from the court functions of Parliament to the smallest local and special courts. Additionally, it contains a number of circuit reports of criminal cases not printed elsewhere.
