ISBN: 9781855325036 Originally known as the Transvaal Rebellion or the Transvaal War of Independence, and now referred to as the First Boer War, this was to be one of those small colonial wars occurring in the latter 19thC and quickly dealt with. Entering the war full of confidence within a few weeks the British had suffered a number of unexpected reverses before the humiliating defeat of Sir George Colley's forces on Majuba. Covering the politics, the main characters, the battles, it is illustrated with contemporary photographs & drawings plus illustrative maps of the main battlesa ndfull-page colour illustrations of the battles showing soldiers in various uniforms. This is an excellent introduction to further readings on the First Boer War.

Bath. c.1985 Original ring folder with loose-leaf pages. A4 format. 2.6kg. With two original key disks (no guarantee). Folder shows its age but contents complete and in excellent condition. Clue was an advanced flat file database cataloguing system designed for DOS computers which provided typeset quality output on laser printers. Originally supplied to Scotland Yard, hence the name, it was later to become a standard for used book dealers. Idiosyncratic in the extreme and with its own language it was capable of excellent output although it had a very steep learning curve.

Ownership signature ffep. spine faded and with indelible black mark. ff tanned. A sound copy. Author arrived in Cape Town one month before the outbreak of war on October 11th 1899. "I had exceptional opportunities of gaining an insight into the difficulties of the problem, not only in meeting the representatives of British policy or opinion in South Africa, but in interviewing President Kruger in Pretoria and President Steyn in Bloemfontein, and other Boer leaders as well as influential gentlemen like Mr Schreiner, the Cape Prime Minister, and Mr Hofmeyr of the Afrikander Bond . I was in Ladysmith on the day of the declaration of war, and in Natal for three weeks after it had been invaded. Travelling by sea to Beira we then visited Rhodesia, leaving there at Christmas, and returning direct to England by January 26th". At the time of writing this title Evelyn Cecil was a Conservative Party Member of Parliament.

They were instructed to keep a daily journal for submission to the Board. Delayed by act of war they only arrived in Port Natal on 21st December. Champion's diary starts on this date. Dingane was not a trustworthy person and his attitude to the missionaries changed continually. Champion's diary is a valuable personal insight into Dingane's despotic rule.
