[CHINA - WOOD PANEL WITH ANCIENT COINS AND CHARMS]., China, probably end of 18th century.
[CHINA - WOOD PANEL WITH ANCIENT COINS AND CHARMS].
China, probably end of 18th century.
. Wooden panel (59 x 35 cm) with 25 bronze casts of ancient Chinese coins and amulets inserted. A solid piece of wood with small scratches and minor wear, parts of old Chinese label on reverse. Mounted in a later wooden frame. The collection shows examples of old coins and charms in the shape of spades, knives, rings, and two large symbolic figures: a horse and two birds in a tree. China was one of the first countries to use metal coinage and its ancient coin history can be traced back more than two thousand years. The Chinese also produced "coin-like" charms and talismans which were used to suppress evil spirits and to bring "good luck" or "good fortune". During the Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BC) some of the first forms of money were cast in the shapes of tools, for example as spades, shovels or knives. Thereafter the "round money" appeared and during the Han Dynasty a round shaped coin named "wu zhu" was introduced. It was minted for more than 700 years from 118 BC to 618 AD. This panel contains nine spade-shaped coins or charms which we believe are the earliest examples in the collection. Two pieces have the knife shape. Three large examples of "open charms" are included with illustrations of a dragon, the zodiac and the eight trigrams. In addition there are seven pieces of different kinds of round coins or charms and two pendant charms, all decorated with different characters and symbols. We believe that the panel dates from the latter part of the 18th century and sits firmly in the context of the Emperor QianlongÕs unequalled obsession with Chinese history, art and literature. Reigning from 1735 to 1796, he created and conserved unparalleled collections of all ages and aspects of Chinese culture while honouring Manchu and Confucian traditions. This panel, with a patina consistent with its (likely) date, was probably used as a teaching aid, and reflects the EmperorÕs interest in promoting and preserving the glories and utility of the Chinese past. A most unusual and impressive work.

[BURMA - PHOTOGRAPHS]., A collection of Twenty-five Original Gelatin Silver Photographs. About 1895.
[BURMA - PHOTOGRAPHS].
A collection of Twenty-five Original Gelatin Silver Photographs. About 1895.
. Twenty-five photographs with images of Rangoon and Mandalay, while the last two are of Penang Island and the Bridge of Penta K›ta. Each photo measures about 15 x 23 cm, four are slightly smaller. The photographs are pasted on grey thick paper (27 x 35 cm) with manuscript caption labels in French. A few of the photographs with minor silvering of the photo margins, the paper mounts have some mild traces of moisture exposure but overall the condition is very good. This is an interesting documentation of British Burma at the turn of the 20th century. (Burma was under British rule between 1886 and 1948). Fifteen of the photos are devoted to Rangoon and its vicinity; of the harbour, street scenes, elephant at work, several of the Shuedagon pagoda, of the Sule pagoda and a few of the countryside. Eight of the photos are taken in Mandalay: city views, the market, Shewenandaw Monastery and the Palace. The Mandalay Palace, built in 1857-9, was the primary royal residence of the last two kings of the country (King Mindon and King Thibaw) up until the Third Burmese War and the annexation by the British Empire. During World War II most of the palace compound was destroyed. The Shewenandaw Monastery is the single remaining major original structure of the original Royal Palace today.

[VIETNAM - PHOTOGRAPHS OF HILL TRIBES]., [A Collection of thirteen postcards with images of different ethnic minority groups]. About 1920s.
[VIETNAM - PHOTOGRAPHS OF HILL TRIBES].
[A Collection of thirteen postcards with images of different ethnic minority groups]. About 1920s.
. The collection of b/w photo postcards (14 x 9 cm) illustrate different ethnic tribes from the highlands in the northern parts of Vietnam (Tonkin). At this time Vietnam was a French protectorate with a French governor. These minority groups still live in the remote mountainous terrain cultivating rice, vegetables and some are raising animals. The people always wear traditional clothes, more or less colourful, whether at home, in the field, or in town. The clothes of one group are quite different from that of other groups. The pictures depict people of different tribes in traditional clothes including Hmong, Tay, Nung, Dzao, Yéo and Yao (Dao), from the provinces of Là Cai (5), Cao Bâng (4), Son la (1), Ha Giang (1), Huyên (1) and Yén Bâi (1). Some of the cards have names written in French and Chinese on the verso.

[COSTUMES FOR "WALZER AUS WIEN" / THEATERKUNST HERMANN J. KAUFMANN]., [A collection of 26 water colour drawings depicting costumes for the pasticcio "Walzer aud Wien"]. About 1930-6.
[COSTUMES FOR "WALZER AUS WIEN" / THEATERKUNST HERMANN J. KAUFMANN].
[A collection of 26 water colour drawings depicting costumes for the pasticcio "Walzer aud Wien"]. About 1930-6.
. Comprises 26 plates (26 x 22 cm) with 31 costume drawings painted in water colours with notes and numbers in pencil. The notes refer to the operetta characters and possibly Swedish artists who were famous at that time. A label "Theaterkunst Hermann J. Kaufmann" pasted on the reverse of the plates. Housed in a specially-made box.The pasticcio "Walzer aus Wien" arranged by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and with music by Johann Strauss (father and son) was first performed at the Vienna Stadttheater in 1930. The following year it was restaged in London as "Waltzes from Vienna" and a French version entitled "Valses de Vienne" was produced in Paris. The successful operetta was based on the rivalry between Strauss the elder and Strauss the younger. We have not been able to find any Swedish performance but this set of drawings listing Swedish artists indicates that such a plan existed, even if it was never implemented. We don't know who made the drawings but the Kaufmann labels suggest that they used to belong to them. Theaterkunst Hermann Kaufmann, founded in Berlin 1907, became the world's biggest costume house for theatre, opera, and later also film productions. In the 1930s the company expanded internationally but in 1936 Hermann Kaufmann had to sell it due to political pressure.

. Dag Hammarskjöld, a Swedish economist and diplomat who served as the second Secretary-General of the United Nations 1953-61. He died in a plane crash in Northern Rhodesia on his way to cease-fire negotiations during the Congo Crisis. He was awarded a posthumous Nobel Prize. This collection contains 22 photos (25.4 x 20.5 cm) of Hammarskjöld's time in office including photos from different UN Security Council meetings, press conferences and assemblies, and others from his official visits to Burma, Thailand, Congo and India. The photos illustrate the conference room, his office, the social areas and a private area, all elegantly decorated with contemporary furniture, notable pieces of art, and his collection of books. The UN has one of the world's finest art collections with contributions from its member States. Hammarskjöld refined the collection with works of art that would coincide with the UN's vision of a world at peace. He is included in a photo taken during Hammarskjöld's visit to India in 1959 when W. served as his personal secretary.

Luqman (also known as Luqman The Wise, Luqmaan, Lukman, and Luqman al-Hakeem Arabic: ) was a wise man for whom Surat Luqman (Arabic: ), the thirty-first sura (chapter) of the Qur'an, was named.
