Colorado Album
Burlington, VT, Wells, Richardson & Co.. Stapled Wraps, 8vo - 7 3/4" - 9 3/4 " Tall. Ill.: Engravings and Advertisements. Ex-Library Paperback Booklet, Circa 1896; Fragile and very scarce; Aged and yellowed, with one closed tear at the bottom of the front cover amended on verso with archival Japanese mending paper; Minimally ink-stamped, retired library copy; An approximately 34-page booklet, having little to do with Colorado residents or history, but is an elaborate advertisement for Paine's Celery Compound, a patent medicine of the time, manufactured in Burlington, Vermont; Nearly every page is a testimonial to the curative powers of this "amazing" elixer. It stops nervousness, bowel problems, the agony of female weakness, Lumbago, Kidney Disease, Insomnia, Rheumatism, Female Complaints, Constipation, Stomach Troubles, Indigestion, blurred sight, headaches, scaly skin, and more. "It is composed of Nature's health-restorers, celery, coca (the heavenly plant), cascara sagrada (the sacred bark), hops, dandelion, buchu, mandrake, sarsaparilla, and chamomile, scientifically combined and compounded..and well deserves the grateful praise of the thousands who it has snatched from the jaws of death"; Another testimonial says it "saved my life and kept me from the Insane Asylum.". Good+.
