Original watercolour. No date [appr. 1910 - 1920]. Meas. appr. 17. 5 x 13. 5 cm. Signed ['G. Tó..?']. In lovely contemp. gilt frame [Uninspected out of frame]. The verso of the frame w. the original circular red paper ticket 'Firma Hooijdonk - Buenders Encadreurs & Vergulders. Inpakken en verzenden naar O. en W. Indië. Weimarstraat 29.' The rock formation known as 'Toppershoedje', a basalt formation rising up from the sea about 30 meters, was notorious for wrecking many ships, due to the ferocious eddies and strong currents. De Dordse Courant voor [July..] 1857 under the heading 'Zeetijdingen' ['Batavia 9 mei'] mentions that the "Jonge Jan", under Captain E.H.Pfeiffer, 'gisteren van Rotterdam aangekomen, op Toppershoedje heeft gestooten.'
