Bacon, Francis
Fr. Baconis de Verulam. Angliae Cancellarii de Augmentis Scientiarum. Lib. IX.
Lugd. Batavorum, Ex. officina Adriani Wijngaerden, 1652. . Hardcover. Size: 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall. Figured frontispiece engraved on copper (see below). Drop caps adorned in woodcut, quite finely. Leiden's edition of the work first appeared in 1605 in English under the title "On the Proficience and Advancement of Learning," and then translated into Latin later and with additions, under this title, first in 1623. The first part of the work is devoted to the exaltation of science, while the second concerns the progress of science, slowly but inexorably (Gibson's bibliography of Baconiana). This work, "De augmentis," is concerned primarily with the classification of philosophy and the various sciences. Bacon opines on his view of the relation between science and theology. Most attractively rebound in 2000 by the master binder Pat Bruno of Sacramento, California Bacon, in full, rich, creamy brown leather, sympathetic to the period, ruled and with four fleurs-de-lis to the four corners, front and rear, carefully tooled in gilt at spine, and with date of publication (1652) at spine bottom and four raised bands to add texture. Only the very lightest of dust soiling along top edge. Text in Latin, this being a profoundly important work by Francis Bacon, the English philosopher, born in 1561, died in 1626. In "De augmentis", which is concerned primarily with the classification of philosophy and the sciences, Bacon develops his influential view of the relation between science and theology." The engraving at title page is quite precious, depicting as it does the mature author, hard at work at a book in double-folio format, and perhaps the younger Bacon or simply another young man (or young woman, given a swelling breast), holding a book aloft, and with the barest outlines of a building (library) in the upper right-hand corner.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . .
