BARMAN, JEAN
The Remarkable Adventures of Portuguese Joe Silvey
Madeira Park, BC: Harbour Publishing, 2004. Softcover. ISBN: 155017326X. A bright, solid book, like new, B&W photos ; Trade PB; 10.9 X 8.4 X 0.3 inches; 88 pages; "British Columbia is known for the colourful pioneers who helped build and shape the character of this weird but wonderful province. And few were as colourful as Portuguese Joe Silvey - a saloon keeper, whaler and pioneer of seine fishing in British Columbia. From harpooning whales in small open rowboats, to serving up liquor to rambunctious millworkers, to being the first man to have a seine license in BC, Silvey was the Renaissance man of his generation. His friends were many, and included saloon keeper Gassy Jack Deighton for whom Vancouver's Gastown is named, his prestigious grandfather-in-law Chief Kiapilano (of the Capilano Nation) and a remittance man who liked to wear either his wife's clothes or none at all. Historian Jean Barman brings to life the story of Portuguese Joe - the romance, the tragedy, and the adventure - with skill, piecing together interviews with Silvey's descendants, archival records and historical photographs to build an intriguing and entertaining portrait of Joseph Silvey, his family, and the time and place in which he lived". 1550173464 BARMAN, JEAN, Stanley Park's Secret the Forgotten Families of Whoi Whoi, Kanaka Ranch and Brockton Point
BARMAN, JEAN
Stanley Park's Secret the Forgotten Families of Whoi Whoi, Kanaka Ranch and Brockton Point
Madeira Park, BC: Harbour Publishing, 2005. First Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 1550173464. Boards and DJ show light shelf wear, DJ has a horizontal scratch line across the back with 1/2" sliver of material missing.; A bright, solid book. Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. ; 9.1 X 6.2 X 1.1 inches; 279 pages; Officially opened in 1888, Stanley Park was born alongside the city of Vancouver, so it is easy to assume that the park was a pristine wilderness when it was first created. But much of it had been logged and it was home to a number of settlements. Aboriginal people lived at the villages of Whoi Whoi, now Lumberman's Arch, and nearby Chaythoos. Some of the immigrant Hawaiians earlier employed in the fur trade took jobs at the lumber mills that dotted Burrard Inlet from the 1860s and settled at "Kanaka Ranch," which was located just outside the park's southeast boundary. Others resided at Brockton Point on the peninsula's eastern tip. Only in 1958 was the last of the many families forced out of their homes and the park returned to its supposed "pristine" character. Working in collaboration with descendants of the families who once lived in the park area, historian Jean Barman skilfully weaves together the families' stories with archival documents, Vancouver Parks Board records and court proceedings to reveal a troubling, yet deeply important facet of BC's history..
