Externally Fine, text also, 4 square corners, ownership signature ffep, has heavy sello offset to eps, else an attractive copy with excellent shelf and table appearance. The Author was an 18-year old girl when she sailed from Texel with her father to the Cape of Good Hope. Her travels took her first along the Cape west coast as far as Calvinia and then returning south they branched along the east coast travelling past Algoa Bay to the Great Fish River, then to Graaf Reinet, returning across the Karoo. Not a large diary for such a long trip, but she tells a tale that was intended for her family circle. Of note is the description of the voyage out and an early stop for shelter in Plymouth where they visited Lord Barrington.

In 1992 kwam tijdens een expositie een uiterst zeldzame, glazen bokaal uit het jaar 1754 in de openbaarheid. Deze bokaal was afkomstig van een schip dat op de walvisvaart voer. Piet Dekker ging op zoek naar het verhaal achter de bokaal. Wie was de commandeur, wie was de schenker, wie de graveur? Dit onderzoek leverde talloze interessante feiten op over de 18de eeuw, maar ook over rederijen in Alkmaar die de schepen uitrusten en de werven in Zaandam en omstreken die ze vaak in eigendom hadden.

Helder: Berkhout & Co., 1875; 8vo (23 cm), xiv+334pp., 2 uitvouwbare (kleuren)litho's waarvan 1 als frontispice, 1 uitvouwbare plattegrond, lijst van inteekenaren, gebonden in geblindstempelde linnen band m. vergulde belettering op rug en voorplat. Conditie boek: boekblok bijna los in de band; behoeft herbinding. De grote kaart heeft bij de invoeging in het boek een inscheuring (zoals gebruikelijk), schutblad en inhoudsopgave liggen los, twee kleine bibliotheekovaalstempels. Schaarse titel, zeldzaam in gebonden editie.
¶ Aan buitenzijde geen bibliotheeksignaturen. Frontispice (tegenover titelpagina) is een monotint-litho, gezicht op de buitenhaven het Nieuwendiep in 1873 (breed 32 cm), in prima staat; kleurenlitho t.o. p. 65 toont een 'Prospect van de Helder 't Nieuwediep en Rheede van Texel alsmeede 't Binnen komen der Hollandsche Vloot in den Jaare 1793' (breed 37.5 cm), eveneens in prima staat. De grote kaart (schaal 1:5000; 67x43 cm) heeft een raparabele inscheuring van 8 cm maar is verder goed. Van dit schaarse boek is door de Europese Bibliotheek in 1969 een reprint uitgegeven, intussen ook al weer schaars en duur.
