23, [1 blank], [3 (numbered [175]-177)], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank] pp. and 150 plates.Grand collection of collotype photographic plates of monuments, views and other scenes in Egypt and Nubia by the French photographer Émile Béchard. Each of the 150 plates is accompanied by a short description, based on the works of renowned Egyptologists, Orientalists, and other scientists like the philologist Champollion who deciphered Egyptian hieroglyphs.Notable plates in the present series include views of Cairo, the pyramids, the valley of the kings, the Karnac temple complex and many other monuments. The original photographs of the present collection by Béchard has won the "medailled d'or" at the "Exposition Universelle 1878", also known as the third Paris World's Fair, as proudly stated in the preface. A loose translation reads: "However, with regard to the photographs that we have had reproduced by the unalterable processes of collotype, let us recall here that the jury of the awards at the Universal Exhibition of 1878 judged them worthy of a first class gold medal awarded to their author, Mr. Émile Béchard" (p. 5).Émile Béchard (1844-?) was a French photographer, active during the 1860s, 1870s and 1880s. "Working in Egypt from 1870 to 1880, the photographer Émile Béchard (1844- ?) is above all known for his genre scenes and cunningly composed Egyptian views, as well as his carefully constructed versions of Egypt’s cultural heritage, ancient or medieval...". (M. Volait, Emile Bechard. The New Cairo in 1874. See: https://heritage.bnf.fr/bibliothequesorient/en/emile-bechard-new-cairo-article).Émile and Henri Béchard together with Hippolyte (Délié) are often thought to be 3 different photographers, related by a family- and/or business-connection (see the Encyclopedia of nineteenth-century photography, p. 131). The Met Museum suggests another theory, in which Émile and Henri are the same person, namely Émile Henri Béchard, and Hippolyte was a distributor of Béchard's work in France. The present album is not bound, the half title-page is somewhat browned and scuffed, the edges of the leaves are very slightly browned and frayed. The margins leaves show some occasional very slight foxing, but the plates remain very clear. Overall in good condition.l Encyclopedia of nineteenth-century photography p. 131; WorldCat 759756036, 9198318, 252011877, 922071449, 80534462; 1179187662, cf. for the photographer(s): The BnF: https://heritage.bnf.fr/bibliothequesorient/en/emile-bechard-new-cairo-article; The Met Museum, https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/266061.

Voice Over IP Fundamentals A systematic approach to understanding the basics of Voice over IP
, Macmillan Technical Publishing, Cisco Press, Auflage: 2Rev ed. (10. August 2006). 432, 22,6 x 18,5 x 2,5 cm, Softcover. Zustand: 2. Providing an introduction to the basics of Voice over IP, this book explains how a basic IP telephony infrastructure is built and works on concepts concerning voice and data networking, and transmission of voice over data networks. It also explains enterprise and service-provider applications and services. A systematic approach to understanding the basics of voice over IP Understand the basics of enterprise and public telephony networking, IP networking, and how voice is transported over IP networks Learn the various caveats of converging voice and data networks Examine the basic VoIP signaling protocols (H.323, MGCP/H.248, SIP) and primary legacy voice signaling protocols (ISDN, C7/SS7) Explore how VoIP can run the same applications as the existing telephony system but in a more cost-efficient and scalable manner Delve into such VoIP topics as jitter, latency, packet loss, codecs, QoS tools, and security Voice over IP (VoIP) has become an important factor in network communications, promising lower operational costs, greater flexibility, and a variety of enhanced applications. To help you understand VoIP networks, Voice over IP Fundamentals provides a thorough introduction to the basics of VoIP. Voice over IP Fundamentals explains how a basic IP telephony infrastructure is built and works today, major concepts concerning voice and data networking, and transmission of voice over data networks. You'll learn how voice is signaled through legacy telephone networks, how IP signaling protocols are used to interoperate with current telephony systems, and how to ensure good voice quality using quality of service (QoS). Even though Voice over IP Fundamentals is written for anyone seeking to understand how to use IP to transport voice, its target audience comprises both voice and data networking professionals. In the past, professionals working in voice and data networking did not have to understand each other's roles. However, in this world of time-division multiplexing (TDM) and IP convergence, it is important to understand how these technologies work together. Voice over IP Fundamentals explains all the details so that voice experts can understand data networking and data experts can understand voice networking. The second edition of this best-selling book includes new chapters on the importance of billing and mediation in a VoIP network, security, and the common types of threats inherent when packet voice environments, public switched telephone networks (PSTN), and VoIP interoperate. It also explains enterprise and service-provider applications and services. The authors of Voice over IP Fundamentals--three packet-voice specialists at Cisco Systems--initiate their exploration of next-generation technologies for supporting conversations across large distances: the switched telephone network as implemented on large (intercontinental) and small (building and enterprise) scales. They then point out problems with the old way of doing things and illuminate the standards and regulatory conditions that have made Internet telephony attractive. Signaling System 7 (SS7) gets particularly insightful coverage, with ample graphical support for the clear, fact-rich, example-laden prose. The authors do a great service for readers by breaking packet telephony into its component technologies and explaining each one carefully. Coverage of the various protocols that enable voice over IP, particularly H.323 and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), is simultaneously clear and deep. The same goes for media gateway protocols and various schemes for translating sounds into digital signals and back again, while retaining maximum clarity. There's even some practical material; concluding chapters diagram Cisco router configurations for voice traffic and flesh out solutions with case studies. You'll like this book if you need to implement a voice over IP system and know more about IP than you do about traditional voice telecommunications. The patient and detailed explanations of traditional telephony concepts and voice over IP protocols will mesh nicely with your existing data communications knowledge, enabling you to make wise design and product decisions. --David Wall Covered topics: The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), signaling specifications (including Bell System, ISDN, and Signaling System 7), the basics of Internet Protocol (IP), modulation and compression of voice, Quality of Service (QoS), H.323, Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), and gateway protocols. Business considerations of Internet telephony are also addressed. Jon and James have a conversational writing style that was easy to follow for me. They have included a lot of historical information that should help the reader understand the momentum behind the transition that is taking place today, creating a "new-world" model of internetworking that has its own rules. As previously mentioned, this is not a design and implementation guide - the forthcoming Cisco Press title "Cisco Voice Integration" will be when it is released. This book does, however, give the reader a very detailed introduction to the underlying technologies that make Voice over IP, Voice over Frame Relay, and Voice over ATM work. The book was a good read even for someone like myself with over 12 years in telephony and networking. Jon and James have done a good job of collecting and communicating relevant information about each of the VoIP building blocks. Mary Warner Blanchard
Oscar Wilde's America. Counterculture in the Gilded Age
Yale University Press, 1998. Gekartonneerd met stofomslag. Pp: 302. In 1882 Oscar Wilde toured America as the 'Apostle of Aestheticism,' his wit and brilliance and deliberate outrageousness creating controversy among audiences across the continent. The America visited by Wilde was a nation still badly shaken by the trauma of the Civil War and Reconstruction. In this atmosphere Wilde`s message of regeneration through art and beauty seemed to many Americans to open new horizons of social possibility. In this book, the first cultural history of the aesthetic movement in the United States, Mary W. Blanchard provides an elegant, imaginative account of a neglected dimension of American cultural history. American Victorian culture will never look as monolithic, nor as prudish, again. Blanchard shows that aestheticism was a wide-ranging popular movement, implemented by an array of tastemakers, resisted by the moral guardians of Victorianism. She constructs the fascinating (and previously unrecognized) lives of the female visionaries who used the decorative arts to assault the conventions of their own middle-class milieu and to advance in the social and business worlds of the Gilded Age. She also shows how the movement allowed new forms of identity for men - in particular feminized or homosexual roles that were profoundly at odds with Victorian notions of manliness. Drawing on evidence from material culture, popular media, and history and literature, Blanchard reveals aestheticism as a vibrant oppositional movement in the American Gilded Age. Stewardship - Choosing Service over Self-Interest
San Francisco, Berrett-Koehler. 1995, First Edition. (ISBN: 1881052281). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy in red cloth boards with VG dustjacket which is not price clipped. xxiv + 264 pages. First edition, seventh printing. The author demonstrates how applying the concept of stewardship will radically change all areas of organizational governance and management. In place of the 'managerial class system', he says, we need to reintegrate the managing of work with the doing of work. No one should make a living anymore watching, measuring, or defining what is best for others - everybody manages and everybody does real work. He spells out extensive reforms needed in many areas: day to day management practices, role of staff groups (accounting, legal, personnel, MIS, and so on), budgetary and financial practices, human resource practices, and pay and performance appraisal systems. 15.
