 George Orwell, Critical Essays
George Orwell
Critical Essays
London, Secker and Warburg, 1946. First edition. Cloth. A first edition copy of George Orwell's 'Critical Essays', presented in the scarce dust-wrapper. First Edition.Presented in the scarce price-clipped dust wrapper. This is a collection of essays by George Orwell which was published the year after his wife Eileen O'Shaughnessy's death. These essays are predominantly wartime pieces that cover a variety of topics, including popular culture as well as literature. Contents include 'Charles Dickens', 'Boys' Weeklies', 'Benefit of Clergy: Some Notes on Salvador Dali', and 'Wells, Hitler and the World State', which was a response to H. G. Wells' 'Guide to the New World&apos. This work was considered by the author himself to be one of his most important works. George Orwell (1903-1950), also known as Eric Arthur Blair, was an English novelist, essayist, and journalist. He is best known for works such as 'Animal Farm' as well as 'Nineteen Eighty-Four', with his many novels remaining influential within popular and political culture. One page of publisher's adverts to the rear of text. Prior owner's ink inscription to front paste down, belonging to Jay Hayward and dated 1946.Collated, complete.  In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original price-clipped dust wrapper. Externally, very smart. Minimal bumping to the spine with a few marks to boards. Prior owner's ink inscription to front endpaper. Dust wrapper is generally smart, with minimal edge wear and chipping to the spine region, with age-toning and spots to both sides of wraps. Clean tear along spine has results in front wrap fully detaching from spine. Because of this, the dust wrapper is presented in a mylar brodart. Spotting to text block. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the odd spot along the fore edge. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed/Good.

Orwell, George [Eric Arthur Blair] (1903-1950); Igor Shevchenko (Ihor Šev enko) [John Chernyatynskyy] (Trans.)
Kolhosp Tvaryn: Kazka (Kolgosp Tvarin) [Animal Farm: A Fairy Tale]
[Munich, Germany], Vidavnitstvi Prometei [Prometheus Publishing House], [1947]. First Ukrainian Edition. Softcover. pp. 91. Slim 8vo. Illustrated card covers measuring 15 x 20.5 cm. Black-and-white portrait of Orwell, accompanying the only known preface he penned for this work. Exceptionally well-preserved with no evidence of any flaws to the extremities. Contents equally without blemish with firm, sound binding. An exceedingly rare offering of this landmark of post-war Ukrainian printing. Fine While the translator, Shevchenko, "a highly-educated twenty-four-year-old" refugee, and his small press (Prometej, or, Promethius) would secure an initial print-run of 5000 copies, a mere 2000 would ultimately be distributed. Fearing that the small work was anti-Soviet propaganda which could antagonize their Russian counterparts, the remaining 3000 copies would be confiscated by the United States military. As Andrea Chalupa notes in 'Orwell and the Refugees: the Untold Story of Animal Farm', "At the time, Stalin was considered a great ally who had helped defeat Hitler; the Western powers acted as if beholden to him. The Americans handed over the seized copies of Animal Farm to the Soviet authorities. (Russia had outlawed the Ukrainian language years ago, during the time of the czar, and the Soviet regime maintained the ban.) The books were destroyed." Also contains the first appearance of Orwell's, remarkable, and, unprecedented, six-page preface. Written at the urging of the translator, "Orwell’s preface to the Ukrainian edition of Animal Farm is a significant document in literary history. It describes the events of his life that shaped a masterpiece of political literature, as well as the outlook we today call “Orwellian.” This preface is his deepest discussion of Animal Farm ever published."
